Just bought a 586 at the gun show today. What's the value of a 4" 586 from 1983? Used my book on S&W by Supica as a guide, but interested in other sources. Thanks for the info.

edited:sorry I put this in the wrong forum.

The 22nd ed Blue Book says $285 for a 98% gun.

Seems a bit low to me though.

Funny thing about that old blue book. It's seldom ever right. I could site 100 or more guns I could only wish to buy for blue book value. There are probably a 1000 or more that the book is way to high on. If you want to get market prices see what they are selling for (not what they are listed for) on gunbroker and auctionarms. Prices may be higher locally depending on where you live but at least it will give you an idea what something is worth before you go to a show and buy one. Hope that helps.

Back in 1992, I paid $327 for a NIB 586 with a six inch barrel. I wanted the four inch, they had the six inch, and I figured since it for target, fun, and home defense, six was fine. Got the only gun I have owned that I've pointed at a live human being for all business purposes. Still have it. Worth every penny.

I purchased a 4" 586 a few months back for $325 out the door. It did not come with box or papers but the gun is in pristine condition. I'm a happy camper.

A 686 was the first pistol I ever bought. It was $325.00 and the serial # was AAB3xxx.

I sold it to buy my wife's engagement ring. The dealer told me the Smith was a better investment.

He was right.......
