I recently found out that I could not bring a side arm with me to South Africa. I was wondering if anyone knew the rules regarding minimum caliber size, what is considered a handgun vs. rifle, are semi- autos allowed, etc. for South Africa. I know each individual country differs.

Any feedback appreciated.

Thx:confused:

iirc, from reading the threads on here, semi-autos are not allowed for hunting and the minimum (from a legal and safety aspect) caliber for dangerous game is .375H&H. There are plenty of people here who know much better than I do though, and I'm sure one of them can give you more information and correct me if I'm wrong.

rexelbion,,

The rules have just changed in the last 3 months. You may not bring a semi automatic rilfe or shot gun to hunt with. You may bring a side arm if is for hunting purposes. You may not any longer bring a side arm for protective purposes. :fire:

RSA is becoming more communist by the moment and one of the first signs of loss of freedom is of course the inability to protect yourself. Just ask Kerry....

You may shoot any bore diameter you wish on plains game but a minimum of a .375H&H is recomended for dangerous game. On plains game I recomend a .30-06 or better. (7MM .300 .338 whatever floats your boat..)

Godd hunting.

So there's no bird hunting in between, huh?

And since they have criminals misusing guns...the answer is to take away the law-abiding victims' guns? Where have I heard that argument before?

Rexel,

It is becoming more difficult to bring any arm into SA, but handguns are out. Even got a few problems recently with a blackpowder handgun that I heard of. If you are definitely going to come here keep in touch with me, I am involved in the fight to keep our arms.

HERE (http://www.saps.gov.za/crime_prevention/firearms/legislation/gov_notice_english.pdf) are some of the SA rules.
I did not have the time to look too closely at it yet, but it looks like handguns are still legal, but the part I have to find out is if you bring a pistol for sporting purposes, can you still use it to defend yourself...

SA is going down the drain...
It is a country where self defence is more and more restricted, and where criminals are protected, not to mention that $1500 will buy your way out of a criminal case, if you have the right skin colour...
