Not very often... One time I was walking out of one of those Walmart Market stores, and three guys walked up to me pretty close and caught me off guard... No trouble, and if they are negative intent, I don't know that I could have responded in time anyway...

Yeah, recently ran down to the local grocery store to get a half gallon of milk. I didn't think I would need it, it was still light outside and I live in a good area. I went in, got the milk, paid for it, as I got to my car I see a drug deal going down. Great, they are likely armed and I have no defense. I did my best to make it look like I never saw them, got to my car and got out of there. Glad they weren't too nervous about witnesses, but never again will I go there unarmed.

I call my favorite pistol "AMEX". I don't leave home without it.
EVER.

Several times (usually when traveling to BLUE states that didn't recognize my CHL). But in practical terms, I've not been in a situation where I've had to literally kick, bite, throw down my valuables & run to save my hide when unarmed.
You know, it really drives home to me how vulnerable you feel when denied the right to protect yourself. I really sympathize with those of you who live in areas where honest citizens are not allowed to (legally) equip themselves with the means to effectivly protect themselves.

Just once....
I don't drink much these days. A few years ago, I had a few glasses of wine and got a little tipsy. Ran out of cigarettes at about 2am and walked to the corner quickie mart to pick some up.
I'm buying smokes and a underage kid runs into the store, grabs a suitcase of beer and in my slightly inebriated state, I block him from reaching the door. It was a classic standoff for about a half minute while we're doing the two-step. He tries to go around, and I block his way (several times).
I didn't get the shakes until after I got home and realized what COULD have happened if he had a knife or other weapon. All for a case of beer.
I vowed after that night, to not go out without my gun or put myself into a situation where I wouldn't have it on me.
I only drink at home now and make sure I have enough smokes to last throughout the night.

One time...didn't like it. Hasn't happened since. Story is too long, so I'll just say...smart a$$ in car, almost takes off my front bumper, flick my lights, shows me his knife, tries a "swoop-n-squat", I avoided the wreck and drove on.. I figured he couldn't throw the knife hard enough to hurt that old '79 Ford truck. :D

A EO friend was in the back of a mini mart and a robber was about to execute the cashier and he killedthe guy. There was a big fuss about race but when the surveilance camera tapes were played my buddy walked free.
