Hi,
I was wondering if anyone is using the SKS for competition shooting, either siloutte or target.

Well Law,
I'd say you might be able to get away with it if you are shooting IPSC style tactical rifle matches, but you probably won't win often. Most of the tactical rifle matches have targets out to 100 yards, with the majority fairly close.

Get good with those stripper clips!

I suppose we cannot all be match prima donnas.

Better to practice with what you have than to dream of practicing with something else.

You might not win much, but you will learn to be quite good if your use that rifle in some of the IPSC or 3 gun matches.

Do you like it? Do you want to shoot it more? Do you want to have fun?
Then shoot it.
I shoot IDPA and IPSC with a CZ and Hi Power. If I don't win it has nothing at all to do with the gun. :) Can't say much for target or sil 'cause I haven't shot them. However, I imagine if you can hit what you are aiming at with the SKS then give it a try. The worst case you spent the entire day shooting.

How do I find the guide lines for the different service rifle shooting sports? If a peep sight were mounted to the back of a SKS rifle, would it still qualify for the service rifle competitions?
Thanks,

Service rifle in the US are only AR15, M1A, and M1 Garand. The NRA as well as the CMP recognize those three rifles only with NO external mods and 4.5lb triggers as being service rifles.

The SKS could be fired in Highpower under the Match Rifle category.

Thanks for the reply. Where would I find regulations on this type competition shooting?

The CMP rules (which govern Leg matches and the National Matches at Perry) can be found at www.odcmp.com

They'll say pretty much the same thing as the NRA Highpower Rifle rules, just laid out differently. The NRA version used to be online, but it looks like it's down today.

I have competed in knockdown head and shoulder silhouette target competitions that had target lines at 200, 300 and 500 yards. I have seen everything imaginable shot there including SKS and AK. Of course, the best shooters were usually armed with M1A, although occasional matches have been won with CETME, FAL and even other rifles. I have not seen them all, but would say that I have been amazed that many rifles are capable of hitting the targets at those ranges with regularity. The ammo was typically milsurp. I have even seen at least one sniper match won with an SKS (that was scoped when shooting mostly against open sights). It did prove that SKS was pretty accurate. Usually though, the "better" rifles outperform. Still, that guy shoots, has fun and is competitive, and bottom line is "shoot what you have. " You might even win. You will have fun, and you will get better. You might even want to upgrade your hardware later, but that is a decision that can be delayed. Delaying competing simply stunts your growth as a shooter.

I have not fired a sks in a match but have used the 7.62x39 in a sar-1 ak type rifle in a match back in 2001 when I was thinking about getting back into highpower and my new match service rifle had not come in yet.

I took 3rd out of like 30 guys and was surprized to find out I did place that high but it was a short course highpower match.
and last sunday I took 2nd in a state championship 1 point behind shawn Mckenna who was last years national service rifle champion as we were both firing M1A's and it was the first time in a match this weekend since 1992 I have shot one.
Borrowed Steve Smiths rifle and it shoots well. it felt good to pick up a rifle after all these years and still shoot a master score with it.

Just go and have fun and do not worry about what rifle you are using.
