I thought this was new, but I see they made it about a decade ago, then discontinued.

Anyone own or shot one? Good, bad or indifferent?

Makes me want to get one to go with my 617.

CZ-75,
S&W did at one time make the 648 but discontinued it several years ago (I believe in 94 or 95). One of the biggest problems with 22 WMR is extraction and hard rotation (binding), these problems are interelated. I redesigned the extractor to eliminate this problem. They are a blast to shoot and they extract with ease. This new extractor, by the way is also used on the new model 647 (17 HMR).

Brett,

I believe it is in production again.

When was the extractor changed?

Is this capable of being retrofit (in conjunction with a new cylinder)?

How will I be able to tell the difference?

Thanks.

Yes it is in production again, that is what I was getting at. It was just reintroduced this year with the new cylinder and extractor design. I finished the design about 1 1/2 - 2 years ago but other things keep it low on the priority list for getting tested and into production :banghead:, until now. The cylinder and extractor are designed together and can not be used independantly of each other with older models.

Brett,

I wanted to say thanks for the redesigned 648-2 extraction system. After wanting a .22 WMR S&W revolver for quite some time, I got one as soon as I saw it has been reintroduced. My experience is you definitely did a great job with the design. My sample functions and extracts with ease, and the revolver is very accurate. Mine is definitely ready for some small-game hunting.

I am also looking forward to the 647. I keep checking to see if it has been released, but the distributors do not seem to have any.

S&W is making some great revolvers.

Scott,
We are getting closer every day, but with the 500 and other new models finally being put into the vault it is difficult to get testing done. The 647 will be going into production very soon (this month perhaps?)

I found a like new 648 a year ago at the gun store. They had it marked as a 22lr, but as I was looking at it, the roll mark said 22 mag. I quietly paid the $300 for the gun and walked out. It is a great shooter, I just wish the ammo was cheaper.

Brett,

Thanks for the update on the M647. I am looking forward to the seeing what the .17 HMR can do in a revolver.

This 648 was purchased new just a few weeks ago. I have yet to fire it so I can't report on that, but it seems to be just as slick as my 617's. Which have become my all time favorite without a doubt rimfire handguns.:)
