Heard on the grapevine that Maryland has discresionary CCW and that it is not difficult for physicians to be approved to carry. I'm not in this state by choice and plan to leave when able, but it wouod be nice to be able to protect myself and family in meantime. Any ideas or suggestions? Point of contact? Benefits vs risks?

Well lesse...Maryland has a population a bit over 5,000,000. California is right around 35,000,000.

So your odds of scoring CCW in Maryland is about six times higher than your odds in California - because they have roughly the same number of permits, 35k in MD versus 39k in Calif.

Best of luck! If you get one, please let us know how. I really can't do 8 years of Med school at this age. For a look at some of the pending legislation try:

www.direct-action.org

If you're free on the 2nd Tuesday of a month try:

www.mcsm.org

I try not to be pessimistic, but I'm also a realistic person.

NavyDoc: I'll try to dig up the documentation later tonight and see what the State Police's procedures manual says. Do you do home visits, and bring narcotics with you? Have you had break-ins at your home by persons looking for narcotics? If you get a permit, it will probably only be valid while you are in possession of narcotics (or while doing work related activities; it most likely wont be valid when you are at the movies), but I'll check on it.

Supposedly the Governor was going to tell the State Police to get it together and start doing shall-issue (the law gives the State Police wide lattitude in choosing who gets a permit), but I havent heard if thats taken effect yet.

MAYBE i SHOULD RE-NAME MY login name to "armydoc"...
Anyway, Navy Doc I am certain we work in the same places.
I and the every single person in the residency program hav tried and, basically, forget it- they don't have to issue you one and - more importantly- THEY DON'T WANT TO.

Give me an e-mail and we can talk about it.

I find this most refreshing that an entire residency program is apparently pro RKBA! I believe the conventional wisdom is that doctors view guns as a public health problem. Could we have some words from other medical pros as to the current view from the inside?
I have also found a mixed bag from the LEO community, ranging from a Maryland cop who didn't want anyone but him armed (the same reaction I got from a Jordanian policeman), to a New Mexico LEO who welcomed the armed citizen’s backup.

The only Marylander I know who actually has a CCW does happen to be an MD. He has a practice in the Frederick area, but also works as a county medical examiner. I think he was able to get it because of that.
