We had a similar thread a couple years ago on TFL but though it was time for an update.

For those that are currently LEOs or are certain of your local policies, please state your location and what handguns are issued and what ammo is issued if possible.

Thanks.

In uniform:

Beretta 96-G Speer 180 gr. Gold-dots
Beretta 84-F Speer 90 gr. Gold-dots (this gun sucks)
Remington 870

All issued guns have night sights

I am a detective so I carry my own Glock 19 with Winchester 127 gr. Rangers and a Glock 27 with 165 gr. Rangers for a back up

I work for the Mesquite, TX Police Department, and I'm issued a Smith and Wesson 5906 (standard sights) loaded w/ 147gr Ranger SXTs. I personally cannot stand this gun, like many others, and am encouraged that we are talking about switching to the Glock.

However, we are allowed to carry anything we can qualify with as a duty gun, so I carry my H&K USP45F w/ night sights, and a Glock 26 w/ night sights as a back-up. Both are loaded w/ Ranger SXTs.

Around the department, you can find a Colt Delta Elite, Sigs of various models, Glocks of various models, and a few HKs, Hi-Powers, 1911s, etc...

I'm in Ohio, and issued a Glock 22C(we can also choose a 23C), with 165gr Gold Dots. It's a nice gun, and goes bang like it's supposed to.

Of two large city PDs in my area, Akron PD just went to the Glock in 9mm, and Cleveland PD is rumored to be going to Glocks in 9mm later this year, both had/have the Smith DAO 9mm. Both cities have city councils who won't allow anything over 9mm apparently.

OSHP had anti Glock firearms trainers and ended up with the Sig P226DAO 40SW/180 Gold Dot a few years ago, with great results apparently.

j.wise,

I think I'd prefer the present policy, if the switch to Glocks is going to mean Glocks only. Nothing against the Glock, but being able to choose your duty gun must be nice.

I don't think the switch to the Glock would be a mandatory one. I believe it would just change the "issued" gun from a S&W to a Glock.

Most of the Tac Team shoots Glock 21s (range officer included), so hopefully that might sway the vote!

The department's issue "gun" is a Glock 17. I refuse to carry one, so I'm grandfathered with my own Springfield M1911A1, .45 acp.
The puppies are awed when we do our re-quals.

The Border Patrol is currently issued the Berretta Brigadier 96D, loaded with hotter than "off the shelf" ammo. The NFU just completed a new round of firearms testing and has two finalists. They have not officially released the names, but I’m pretty confident in my “guesses” ;) that they are the HK USP and the SW99. I expect the USP to win out and wouldn’t be surprised to learn that that has already been given the nod, which has had something to do with the new HK plant opening up Stateside. Second largest gov’t contract awarded can make a business do something like that.

We are issued Glock22's. Our detectives and investigators can trade them for Glock 27's. Ammunition is the Ranger SXT.

I want to join Delta's Dept. The only ones who get tac lights are the SRT guys. My Glock was issued before having the accessory rail was available.

Well Hawkeye, our SWAT guys get Glock 35's withe the same set up as my Glock 22. I'm jealous, I would love a G35.

I just wish I could have a Glock 20 or Glock 21 instead of these sub calibers. ;)

I've been issued the Glock 22 in the past. (Old PD.)

I'll receive a HK USPc .40s&w in the relatively near future. (New federal job.)

I'm given a choice of most major manufacturers, in 9mm or .45. Damn, I'm lucky.

I carry a full size USP45, condition one. Currently a 642 as backup, shortly switching to a Kahr MP9.

The department's issue "gun" is a Glock 17. I refuse to carry one

And who could blame you? ;)

I noticed more and more PD's are switching to Winchester Ranger SXT. I've shot a couple cases of it in 127gr. +P+ LEO through a Beretta 92 and a Browning Hi-Power (and I'm just a poor and lowly 23 year old civilian *gasp*) and it's definately the best stuff going out there! I still prefer to carry Winchester 124gr. waterproofed FMJ NATO loads though. Call me goofy.

I am not a law enforcement officer, but my brother-in-law is with 22 years in the field. Our local department is converting over from Ruger P95's to Glock 22's. The training officer that just retired thought that the world revolved around the 9mm and P95. He was anti- Glock and anti- any larger caliber. The new training officer has opened the field up to upgrade the wepons. They had some serious issues with the P95. The local SO carries 40's, any choice as long as you qualify with it. Most are carrying G22's. The Arkansas State Police issues G21 or G35, officers chioce. Most of the troopers are opting for the G21. Arkansas Game and Fish are issued G22's.

TPD just switched to Glocks 22/23. It was on the news. The old pistol of 10 years was a HK USP 40 (DAO). The news said the reason for the switch was Glocks safer trigger & a light rail so the cops could see what their shooting at. They showed both pistols laying on a table w/ the slide locked back. I saw the light rail on the HK. Me I like Glocks better than HKs. I don't know what they mean by safer trigger? I guess they mean TPD might actualy hit something using the Glocks 5.5# trigger. Because w/ the HKs DAO 12# trigger. TPDs miss rate was 95%. The news said each officer would receive 10 hrs of class room/range trianing on the new pistols.

sonoranjack what do you bet the street cops will be allowed to use pistol mounted lights on routine duty for long? (Let's see--First time a city council person's spouse or child gets lit up by a SureFire mounted beneath a .40 bore barrel? Especially on a pistol with no manual safety? Hummmm.)

We can carry pretty much any duty-worthy sidearm with which we can qualify. At last qual day, there was an almost equal split between - - -
- - Glocks--Mostly .40, numerous 9 mm, a couple of .45s.
- - 1911 -types.
- - "Others." these included SiGs, USPs, Browing HPs, and even a couple of revolvers.

Deputies here vastly prefer to carry their own sidearms. We have a number of issue items available, but I only know of a couple who use 'em.

Best,
Johnny

Greeting's All,

Back when I was a LEO, the handgun of choice was at
the officer's own personal discretion; but was not
a departmental issued item! This is the one thing that
you (the officer) had to provide up front. Criteria was
caliber's:

a) Revolver's: .38 caliber of larger, so long as you
could make the necessary qualification score. So this did
include: .357 magnum, .41 and .44 magnum, .45ACP and
.45LC. Barrel length 2" (for undercover/plainclothes work)
4" to 6" for uniformed patrol officer's.

b) Semi-Automatics: along about 1980 the big switch
to the semi-auto's occurred; with the high capacity 9m/m/s
being in great demand. The Smith & Wesson model 59 was
a big crowd favorite, cuz every officer like the "spray and
pray" idea of gunfighting! Enter the GLOCK, as it took
the department by storm; especially the 9m/m model
17. Between 1975-1980, the .45 caliber Browning BDA
saw limited service within our department; but once the name
changed to SIG-Sauer, this weapon also took off; with
many of the "old timer's" preferring it, as opposed to
the Glock. Then in 1990, with advent of the .40 S&W a few
troops again switched loyalty. Today, you see Glock's, SIG'S,
Beretta's, H&K's, and a few Smith's within my old department.
Caliber's range from: 9m/m, .357 SIG, .40 S&W, to the time
tested .45 ACP!

Best Wishes,
Ala Dan, N.R.A. Life Member

The department issues Glock 23's. Not sure how that happened.:
I carry a G-22. Policy allows us to carry what we wish on duty as long as it's in .40 S&W and we can qualify with it. Off duty is personal choice.
Ammo is 180 gr Gold Dots.

I carried a Glock 22 in my last assignment. I am currently employed inside an institution, so don't carry on-duty. The ammo was 180-grain JHP, whatever was on contract (Ranger or Remington).

Off-duty, pretty much up to the individual.

CHP carries the 4006.
California DOJ carries the Glock 23 (just switched to .40 from 9mm, where issue gun was Glock 19).
State Controller's Office investigators carry Sigs in 9mm (226, I think).
California Department of Fish and Game carries the Glock 22.
Alcohol Beverage Control carries the 3913 (I think).

Don't know the ammo carried...

Just a few of the state agencies. When I think of the others, I'll put those in, too.

.45 Glock with Speer GoldDots is dept issue.
Most deptuys carry the "free" gun ...

However, one can carry whatever he qualifies with.

I personally tote a Sig p220 but am also qualified to carry a 1911 Government model.

at the range last night, i helped a wet-behind-the-ears Washington State Patrol officer adjust the sights on his newly issued H&K USP .40 fullsize. his partner had the .40 compact. he told me that they just started issuing these to the new wave of graduates from the academy. if i'm not mistaken, they switched from the Beratta 96 DAO. i told him they were pretty darn lucky to get such nice guns. (i'm an HK fan) they were both unfamiliar with their weapons so i gave them a quick crash course in how to field strip and reassemble, where to lube and how to clean. aren't i nice? and i have a severe dislike for the WSP, something must be wrong with me.

All Australian police departments are currently in the process of moving to the Glock 17 9x19mm. Uniformed officers have no choice in what they carry and *must* carry this department-issued handgun.

Previously, they had an assortment of various revolvers.
