Note that only 17 were built this way. Number "1" is suspected to have been destroyed in testing. Number 12 is seen above.

Number "2" is seen above. This rifle is modified. Note that where the charging handle was, there is a cover-piece of some sort. It originally looked like Number 12.

Here's a good comparrison of the original charging handle and the modified one. It was later modified to its current configuration.

Some dork chimed in over at the AR-15.com industry forum that Armalite never made the AR-15 with a charging handle in the carrying handle opening. I knew they did, but had to get the photos. BTW, it's a great book. If you can find it, buy it. I've got mine... tons of cool stuff like this for fans of the AR-15 or just weapon historians like myself that need fodder to lobby against the M16 incessantly and to the point of nausea!
