Does anyone know anything about a J. C. Higgins model 583 shotgun?
It is a Grandfather's estate gun. It is marked "Proof Tested, 2 3/4" Chamber". It is twelve guage.

The Sears J.C. Higgins brand name Model 583 number was the High Standard Model 200 pump gun.

Things could be a little confusing here, because Sears-marked guns also used the 583 number for a good number of guns made by High Standard and H&R.

High Standard shotguns were good quality guns, and sold well in their day.

You can still buy most Model 200 parts from Gun Parts Corporation.

Sears had a recall on some of there JC Higgins 12 gauge shot guns.
Phone number is 1-800-817-9165. As I understand it, there was a problem with the bolt flying out the back when fired. If it is not recalled, have a blast.
I have a JC Higgins 20 gauge that has seen better days, but its still one of my favorites.

The recall is on a bolt-action shotgun.

I know this is an old thread but I bought a 583 no knowing about the recall. I gave $50 for it and now I see that Sears has a recall on them anywhere from $160 to $50. Does anyone know the exact amount. Mind is a 12 gauge 583.20
