Anyone know the specifics on Inspector Callahan's smith? A buddy of mine would like to pick up one identical to that used in the movies, but we're not sure on the barrel length.

I think he used a 6" throughout most of the actual movies but had the big 8+" on posters and for dramatic effect.

We were thinking 6" as well, but hard to tell by watching. Hey, don't you have guns to sell? Get off the computer!

I thought it was a Model 57 .41 Mag converted to .44 Mag, due to the scarcity of the M-29.

i read they used a M-25 in .45 for some of the close up camera work for teh effeect of the big chamber holes

Model 29 wasn't really scarce when they filmed Dirty Harry.

It wasn't selling very well because it was seen as a speciality handgun, but it could be found on dealer shelves or ordered from S&W.

It became VERY scarce once the movie became a hit. S&W couldn't make them quickly enough.

I read somewhere that a M25-5 in .45 Colt was the actual pistol used, due to the availability & cheap price of .45 Colt blanks and the nonavailability (at the time) of .44 Mag blanks.

I believe it was a 6 inch M29-2. I think that is the most widely acknowledged Inspector Callahan sidearm.

Harry Callahan carried a 6 1/2 inch barreled, blue finish, N-frame Smith & Wesson during most of the movie series. Caliber is supposedly 44 Magnum, according to the dialogue in the films. He also used an Automag 44 at the end of one film and in the "Dead Pool" he carried a 6 inch barreled 629.

i was lucky enough to have been there when they shot the movies...at least the first one.

at that time the m-29 did not offer a 6" barrel...they had the 6.5"

the posters had him with a 8.375" barrel for visual effect

they were unable to come up with a 6.5" m-29 at the start of shooting, so they used a m-57 instead...it had a 6" barrel...it was blue and had the target hammer, trigger and grips

It was a 6.5" barrel. I remember because that was all we talked about for months around the dinner table when I was young.

Dirty Harry Dirty Harry Dirty Harry. Gotta get that gun. Must've been after the movie became famous because I also remember how he cpmplained how he had to pay $600. for a gun that was like, 3 times the price of any other Smith at the time. That was the dealers that did that to the prices.
