Most of my experience in past few years
is with automatic pistols however I do
enjoy revolvers, I have owned smith's
and charter arms had good luck with both
but I have been looking at the Taurus
model 817, 7shot. I have read a number
of threads many not good about Taurus,
are they really that poor,? what are the
major complaints with the ones you own.? Any advice appreciated.!!

I think you need to split the talk about the ultralight titanium revolvers from the 'normal ones'. I think most of the problems I've heard have been with the Titanium models.
My wife loves her Tracker, and according to other folks (one professional instructor) the trigger is easily as good as a smith. I suspect we got lucky on that one ;-)

I owned a Taurus Mod 85 Ultralite in .38 spcl and also a Mod 605 in SS .357 mag. I shot them both extensively; both showed beautiful workanship, accuracy, handling characteristics, and complete reliability. I'd recommend their revolvers without question.

You might do a search, as there are tons of threads on the "comparison" topic.

I have shot Charter Arms revo's, own a Taurus revo & own a couple S&W's. OF the 3 I prefer the S&Ws. There is just more consistency from sample to sample than I've experience w/ Taurus.
Taurus does make some appealing revolvers. My only concern is that from sample to sample, there is a wide varience in QC.
If you want a Taurus, check it over really well. Check for fit & finish and make sure the trigger meets w/ your requirements. Don't buy a Tauri sight unseen!

I have owned 3 Tauri. The first was a PT22 that jammed on everything but Winchester Wilcat, so I sold it back to the place I bought it from.
The second was an 85UL. The star looked like crap, and a timing problem was wearing down the notches in the cylinder. The revolver functioned fine but I wanted something else. I traded it back to the place I bought it from for a PT92.
I actually liked the PT92, at first. While cleaning it the first time, I removed the grips (one screw fell out while shooting), and attempted to install a set of Hogue grips. Taurus uses a bushing for the top left grip hole only. When you remove the Taurus grips the bushing and screw remain in the grip. I tried to remove the bushing, and boogered it up. I called Taurus and ordered the parts (grip screw and bushing, to replace the bushing I screwed up and replace the screw which was lost on the range). I was told it would take 7-10 days for delivery. After 10 days, I called them to ask if the parts had shipped. I was told no, but that the parts would ship by the end of that week. I was given this line 3 times, 3 different weeks. I finally caved in and ordered the parts from Numrich. They arrived in a matter of days. I traded the PT92 recently for a Glock 17, and will never own another Tauri again.
Oh, I STILL haven't recieved the parts from Taurus.:cuss:

I've had no problems with my PT-945; as I've written previously it's the first DA .45 auto that fits my hand properly, and while I still prefer the 1911A1 (my Kimber), from what I've heard about ambulance chasing attorneys in self-defense cases I'm considering going to the PT-945 as primary carry piece once we finally get CCW passed in this state. The only thing is, I'd like to replace the combat sights on the 945 with some sort of night sights - just have to find ones that don't cost an arm and a leg!

I have a Charter Arms Bulldog Tracker (.357) circa '88, that is a nice revolver. Had a Taurus Tracker with an incredible trigger, but I didn't care for the porting. Have a model 60 and a 66 Smith, both are great revolvers. I think Taurus makes good revolvers, I'd just stay away from the ones that have more than the standard in/out holes;) . My model 66 Smith's trigger is getting better all the time, very pleased with it. The 60 gets used less, but is very easy to have along, just in case.

Most of my handguns are Taurus and Rossi. They are good guns. Maybe not as smooth and crisp as a S&W or Colt,But Darn good guns.:)

...own two Taurus revolvers. I have an M617 .357 Mag SS Snubbie and a .44 Mag Raging Bull. Both are very accurate, reliable, and fit and finish is great. I would recomment Taurus revolvers to anyone. Apparently in the past, many Taurus guns were not of good quality. I believe this has changed dramatically.

Taurus makes some fine revolvers. I have owned several over the years, and while they all functioned adequately, I just never was able to shoot them as well as I could my S&Ws. The double action trigger pull on the Smiths was always smoother and lighter and even with trigger jobs, the Tauri just never equaled the Smiths. Proves to me the old adage,"You get what you pay for"
