I'll be going on my first coon hunt in a week... and was wondering what size shot you use to hunt? Any opions on loads/brands? I'll be using a 16gauge pump..
Any other tips I should be aware of? I'm going with friends that have dogs and go coon hunting every chance they get.. So I'll be in good company..
:D
Thanks for any help!

Any shotgun load will bring one out of a tree but I wouldn't suggest using one if you are keeping the hide.We allways used a 22 and aimed between the eyes. You will do a lot of walking and a light 22 will be better to carry than a heavy shotgun.
Tips?? Take a good light and a spare isn't a bad idea either. It's no fun being a few miles from the truck and your light goes out.Trust me.

It sounds like 17HMR is perfect. But a .22 should do you nice...

A shotgun will definately take one out of a tree, but like the others recommended take a .22, pistol preferred. After chaseing htem dang dogs through the underbrush and briars for a few hours you would appreciate a light small .22 handgun.
Most of the guys I used to coon hunt with had Ruger 10-22's with a light bracket on them that would take the helmut light from their head lamp. Actually if you are with other hunters, one gun between all of you will be sufficient. Once the dog call treed the coon isn't going anywhere.
Do take a good light and a backup just in case. Been there, done that. :D
