Mississippi - The South's Warmest Welcome!

Try Rock House Trading Post on Highway 19N towards Collinsville, and Garrett's on 8th Street, about 35th Avenue. There's also a supposedly large shop @ Philadelphia, but I haven't been to it yet. I don't know of any ranges in the area.

Meridian is a great place! I used to fly down there a lot, but haven't ever really looked around on the ground.

You've got to watch those Navy guys! :neener: Weirdest time was once when I did a weather approach into the NAS in a T-37. We shot an approach at Key Field, then went over to the NAS and broke out of the clouds at about 650 feet (that's roughly 400 feet AGL) and looked around. There coming right at us flying sideways was a Navy guy doing VFR touch and go landings under the clouds. So we declaired a missed approach, eased back up and disappeared back into the overcast. Sometimes you see things you just don't like, if you know what I mean. :D

Hahaha. I'm here in Meridian for T-45C TS. Can't wait to start flying that bird. The pattern altitude is 600 feet, AGL I believe, which is DAMN low! The pattern altitude at Whiting was 800 feet AGL. Pretty slick.

There is magnolia rifle and pistol club in byram ($100 first year and $75 ever year after that) I am a member here and you can shoot out to 300yds.

THere is a range in poplarville (sp?) but I've never been there.

And there is the starkville gun club.

go to nrahq.com and find their rang findetr feature.

An Academy Sporting goods has opened in Jackson Very recently and it is AWESOME (they have 25 round butler creak 10/22 mags for $19.99) It is by the Toys R US on County line road.

Are you required to shoot paper targets, or can you shoot objects too?

Anyone been to this one?

You can shoot steel plates (if you have any) coke bottles, cans, vegetables and other non-dangerous stuff. But you need to clean up after yourself.

One rule that I remember (other tahn the safety ones) is that you can't shoot Tracer rounds (it has caused fires).

I really like the place.

Welcome to Mississippi Fly Navy.
Here is the url to Magnolia Rifle and Pistol Club (http://www.magnoliarpc.com/)
It is a ways from Meridian being just south of Jackson on I-55. I gave up my membership last year and at that time shooting at proper targets was required.

The Byram range is over 100 miles from NAS Meridian. There is another range, Sherman Hill, along I-20 near Forest, maybe 50 miles closer.

Yeah I asked about that one in Forest. How is it?

Hey, welcome to my home state, even though I don't live there now. (But family does, so it's still home.)

Don't know any of the ranges near Meridian, sorry. I used to go with friends to some land they owned in south-central Miss., never really bothered to find any ranges up where you are.

Once you get settled in, if you're on base, ask some of the Nat'l Guard folks, they'll know of a few places I'll bet. (If you're still "Navy" then you're at G.V. Mongtomery, I'm guessing....)

I'm here in Meridian for T-45C TS. That's great! You'll enjoy the South in the winter time! There are some really great days where you can see all the way to Shuqualak from 15,000 ft over Meridian. Summertimes there are really hazy and there is that layer of crud at 5000 feet that defies description.

Going back to the original question, there is Sanders on 5th street and Garretts on 8th Street. I haven't been shopping in Meridian for a while, but I have family there and my kinfolks have patronized both places if they're still in business.

You have to understand about the deep south, in rural areas and small towns most gunstores are in pawn shops and hardware stores. And expect to stop and talk for a long time.

If you want to drive a little bit, go down 45 south to Citronelle Alabama, then stop and ask how to get to Quints Ace Hardware in Saraland, another 15 miles or so. Go in and ask the lady about the guns and she points you to a dark stairway, which is guarded by a giant moose head. Down the stairway is a gun store taking up the entire basement. Plan on making it a day if you go, because driving is a lot longer than flying. (If you fly, the trip from Meridian to the Coast Guard base at Bates Field in Mobile only takes about 20 minutes at 250 knots. But the field is still about 40 minutes from the store and car rental is across the field at the airline terminal so even flying will take all day anyway.)

If you happen to fly in to Pensacola there is a place, really kind of hard to find, called Gateswood Sports 'way out on the northside on Pensacola Blvd. This is one of those really fantastic old dusty hobby places where the guy knows everything there is to know about black powder and half of everything about reloading. The last time there I got his attention though. I showed him my medieval hande gonne, something he hadn't seen before. http://www.silcom.com/~vikman/isles/scriptorium/firearm/handgonn.html

You do know that you can't buy a pistol in Mississippi, Alabama or Florida unless you change your residence to that state? Being stationed there doesn't count for residence unless you change your drivers license and state income taxes and establish a residence and not just the Batchelor Officers Quarters.
