I would like to get a "holographic" sight to try on one of my AR-15 carbines and have narrowed my choice to EO Tech and Bushnell. Looking at these two sights they look very similar except for the "guard (shield?)" surrounding the unit on the EO Tech while the Bushnell unit does not. Also, the price difference is only about $30 - $40 between these two makers.

Are Eo Tech and Bushnell holographic sights manufactured by same factory and are they made to same specification? Is EO Tech any better than Bushnell to justify higher cost? Finally, is the "guard(shield)" on the EO Tech a worthwhile feature... does it really offer additional protection?

EOTech private labels the rollbar-less holo sight for Bushnell. From the Bushnell I've seen, it seemed identical to the 511 I have IIRC, minus the rollbar of course.

Although I keep relatively good care of my rifles, I do like the added protection (at least the thought of it) in the remote event that I drop the rifle (AR) top side down. I use it mainly for plate shoots. If you use or think you'll use the rifle in a rough manner, I'd go with the rollhoop. Plus it looks a little cooler with it.

The EOTech is, basically, a ruggedized HoloSight. There are further detail differences on some models, but that's the case in a nutshell...
