First, the 1851 Navy was never a .44, it was a .36. The .44s are strictly modern contraptions. The Remintons are well thought of by modern shooters, mainly, IMHO, because they look like a modern gun with a top strap and they have better sights. Cabelas sells Piettas.

My opinion: get a 1851 Colt replica chambered in .36 (use .380 balls). Yes they are harder to sight, but do-able. Caliber .36 is economical and very pleasant to shoot (44 cal C&B revolvers are pleasant to shoot as well). The open top design of the Colt with its large diameter cylinder pin handles black powder fouling better than the Remington which in my experience is very bad in this area (contempory reports from the 19th century state the same). I think that Uberti pistols are somewhat better than Piettas in the quality of materials and their fit and finish. If money is no object and orginal style is not important the best C&B revolver of all times is the contempory Ruger Old Army.

Try EMF direct:

Currently their prices beat Cabelas by a bit.

They have a greater selection. I've ordered and received 2 1858 Remington NMA .44 steel framed blued. At first I only ordered one (Pietta), but it was so smooth that I ordered the second, asking for more of the same. The second one was the next in the series.

Pietta Remington NMA $173.90 UPS 2nd day shipping.

I'd go with the remington. Its easier to clean, and some can be converted to shoot metallic cartridge through the use of an "R&D" or "Kirst" converter. The remingtons tend to be more accurate, colts often shoot high. I personally own 6 remingtons, and 3 colts. The colts I have collect dust, cause I hate to clean them. The remingtons go with me to the range.

Cabella's is ok, but at times a little high priced. I would suggest Dixie gun works.:D

The EMF 1858s... what brand are they? Traditions?

They seem really nice from the pictures, but I've only handled a Traditions 1858 brassframe.

The EMF Remmie 1858's are Piettas...I don't know about the 1875's or Colt replicas. Call and ask. They are very helpful over the phone.
