Does anyone know the serial number sequence for the "earlier" Universal M1 carbines, the ones that have the single recoil spring.? I am looking at one but don't want to take it apart unless I'm really serious about purchasing. The serial on the one I am considering is 1555xx. For less than $200 I'm willing to take a chance with a Universal single spring version. The wood is in good shape and the bluing is 98%. WTM

There's an easier way.
As I recall, when Universal changed to the double recoil spring setup, they also changed to the stamped op rod.

If the op rod is thin, stamped metal with an open bolt camming area, it's a newer version.
