Caps fall off

I just put some no. 11 caps on my Traditions 1851 .44 cal. pistol and they don't stay on very well. I know this is a dumb question, but am I supposed to crimp them with the capper when I put them on? By the way, they are the right size.

Try using # 10 caps if you can get some.I use them on my revolvers and they stay on quite nicely. If you can't find them try pinching the #11 caps a bit.

and if the nipples on your revolver are too big and the #10's don't go down all the way you can polish them down with a dremel tool to make them fit perfect.

I used to have the same problem with a Walker Pistol.

Another poster here suggested that I pinch the primer to make it stay on better. That seemed to cure the problem for me.

Pinching is the way to go to make them fit as well as possible. It seems that all black powder gun manufactureres are recommending #11 caps and #10s fit a lot better on every one of them. My tight Uberti/Colt Wells Fargo needs # 10s and ties up badly with # 11s.

I find that if I pinch #11s on my 1851 and 1849 that the fired caps fall off and sometimes bind up the cylinder (more so with the 1851, but occasionally with the 1849). If I use #10s, they stay on the nipple after firing and don't do this.
