I recently purchased an old marlin that looks almost identical to the one shown here in auctionarms

http://www.auctionarms.com/search/displayitem.cfm?itemnum=6154225

The only difference that I can see is that the buttplate is not plastic, but a simple sheet steel one. I suppose the plate might have been made as a replacement, though it doesn't really look like that.

I plan on restoring the rifle to give to my wife for Christmas, since it should make a good starter rifle, but I'm curious about the history of it. How long ago were these made, judging by the sights, barrel markings, it certainly doesn't look very new. Just curious about the history and age. Any information would be appreciated.

The Marlin Model 100 was made from 1935 to 1959.

After 1945, Marlin used a letter code to ID the year made.
From 1946 to 1959 there codes were:
1946-C
1947-D
1948-E
1949-F
1950-G
1951-H
1952-J
1953-K
1954-L
1955-M
1956-N
1957-P
1958-R
1959-S

From about 1930 to date, Marlin made a wide variety of cheaper .22 rifles in single shot, repeaters, and autos.
These rifles were all low-priced, and intended to be budget priced, utility guns.

These low-end rifles were often sold under the "Glenfield" name.

Value on these is usually around $100.00.
