View Full Version : Can I put a pistol grip stock on a Saiga without drilling new holes?

I like the idea of having a pistol grip stock. But I really like the look of the gun the way it is. I just got it yesterday. I like the pistol grip because my friend has one on his vepr and the gun just handles so nicely.

I do not want to have new holes drilled in my gun to accomadate a pistol grip stock though. Is there a different stock out there where I wouldn't have to do any modicfications to the gun.

I was also wondering, what if I bought a stock for a shotgun and just made some modifications to it to make it fit the holes where the stock is attacted to now? Would it work? I wouldn't think there would be too much recoil on it. It is only in 7.62x39. Or am I just being foolish?

Thank you kindly,

Mike

in order to put a pistol grip on it you are looking at doing some mods to it anyway. you will first have to get the US parts count up to the '89 standards 5 i think. according th the folks at gunsnet.net ak-47 boards, a standard ak pistol grip wont just bolt on to a saiga. IIRC to get a ak grip to work you have to move the trigger group back to make any pistol grip and stock hook up and look right. it is good advice to have a gunsmith do the work unless you are at a skill level that is near a gunsmith level ( a couple of builds under your belt). I dont know on using a sgun stock, but if it has a pistol grip you still need the US part count. I would enjoy the gun the way it is. buy a vepr also cause you can never have too many guns.

hope this helps

P.S. I heard that 30 rd mags might soon be avaible for the saiga soon.

Hm, better move that 308 Saiga near the top of my EBR list.

Actually, according to the guys at www.forum.saiga-12.com, all of the higher capacity magazines are on backorder. Several of them are assuming that EAA hasn't received shipment of any magazines yet. Just an FYI.

Oh, and that same board has a link to a step by step walkthrough for converting a saiga rifle to pistol grip. Also, at least one of the members has made his own thumbhole type stock that doesn't require moving the triggergroup. Something to think about if you are handy.

a benefit to a thumbhole stock is that you wont have the US part count to deal with. just somthing to consider.

Also a my friend who has a vepr and a saiga 20ga told me that there is a tool that came with his to put in a hole near the rear site so that you can remove some of the parts. I didn't get a tool like he mentioned. I did get a thing that looks like it is for pounding pins out.

What is my friend talking about? And do I need it?

Both mine came with a black pin punch, thats what he is talking about, it was in the cleaning kit.

You dont need the pin punch to do any normal disassembly for cleaning

Just drill the holes. You won't be disappointed with the results. I successfully converted mine over the weekend, and I consider myself very clumsy around sharp, pointy tools. Here's a link to the conversion. It's much easier than it looks.

The conversion process is relatively simple. Just take your time. The hardest part would be to drill out the spot welds. The rest is pretty easy.

Just a bit more and I'll have my .308 finished.

hicap mags for saiga's are backordered. best option is still converting to 4-5 US parts 5 parts with pistol grip. dremel+drill its pretty easy though good luck finding a parts kit they are sold out due to AWB sunsetting and massive ammount of projects upstarting.

few people on forum.saiga-12.com make stocks for saiga rifles/shotgun with pistol grip. might be able to buy one.

I'm very curious. I don't know a lot about the Saiga, but I want one only because it DOESN'T have an assault rifle pistol grip. What is so great about the Saiga that you want to convert it, rather than trading for a normal AK?

The Saiga with a pistol grip is shorter. I feel it balances better. The conventional AK trigger feels much better than the Saiga trigger does.

For a 7.62 x 39 without a pistol grip I would recommend an SKS.

For rifles, there are many choices. If you want a Kalashnikov action shotgun Saiga is the only game in town.
