Yeah, I know, you've got one of each.....BUT.....which one do you use the MOST?
Or which do you have even if you have no other?

I would say Glock, but since it's not on the list, I went with 1911.

Gotta go with the Ruger .22 auto. I take mine to the range every trip, and always see 2 or 3 more there. Now if the question is which is my favorite, that would be the 1911A1. :)

Actually none of the above. The Glock 17 is probably the most used gun in Law Enforcement, in several countries.

The Beretta M9 is probably up there also.

S&W Revolvers have been issued for what? 30 or 40 years? in all types of law enforcement units.

Next would be the 1911.

Oh well, I voted before reading the question fully. I voted S&W Revo for being the most popular handgun on the list, overall.

On a global scale, the Browning High Power has everything beat.
Since 1937 Millions have been produced and most are still in service.
It even beats the Glock in numbers still in use.
I have become quite fond of my Glocks however. and they are my favorite centerfire pistols.
I use, carry, and enjoy my rimfire Smith and Wesson handguns just as much as my Glocks though.
Geez I don't think I can answer this question with just one choice!

otomik's post below mine says my question doesn't make sense.
Actually my answer makes sense in the fact that more day to day gun carriers strap on Browning High Powers, or clones thereof, than any other single type of handgun when viewed from a global perspective.
In most cases these High Powers are the only handguns the folks that use them are ever going to see or use and as such it makes the High Power the most popular day to day handgun for many carriers on a global scale.
I as a free man have no such restrictions and no real bias to what I may carry day to day, and depending on what I am doing, I have a wide variety of handguns to choose from and cannot say in that I have one and only one that I choose above all others.

Browning Hi-Power, but Beretta 92 should be up there too
Indonesia, Spain, France, Italy, Egypt, Brazil, USA, Chile, Mexico, South Africa...

your question doesn't make much sense anyway
"the SINGLE most popular handgun" is a different question from "the handgun i use the most"

I shoot my CZ-75 the most and carry a j-frame revolver or 1911 pretty much split 50/50.

However, everywhere I go shoot, I see folks shooting 1911s. They are very popular, at least in my area.

I voted Ruger .22 auto because I always seem to have at least one of those. That has been the one constant in all my gun trading years. You got to have a good .22 handgun and one of the most common is the Ruger MKII. You can always find one at a gunshow or a local store and they never wear out so all that have ever been made are still working somewhere. There must be millions of them floating around.

Of those listed on the poll, the 1911. I've been really into CZs and derivatives lately, but the 1911s are a close second.

Also, the Taurus PT99 is my gun that I've fired the most.

Most popular in the WORLD is the SW revolver.

Most popular auto in the world is likely the BHP, so many countries armed forces use it or a close-copy of it.

Only us rugged, steely eyed no-nonsense 'Mericans have any use for a pistol that throws a .45 caliber slug.

S&W revolver!

I have to admit, I've been considering picking up a 1911 in the near future. There's just something about the classic lines that appeals, kind of like a good single action revolver, they just look "right".

October 25, 2004, 08:16 PM
I'm going with the Smith & Wesson revolver. It is said that millions of Model 10s alone were manufactured. Add the J-frames and all those other K- L- and N-frames and I suppose that tops every other type in this poll.

Even with Glock counted, they are a fairly recent phenomenon and I doubt their millions would top the Smith Revolvers.

Just my unsupported opinion....

I'd have to say the 1911! It served the milatary around the globe for 75 years, has been copied and duplicated by almost all gun makers in one form or another. The design itself is responsible for many of the auto designs we see and buy today. Next would be the the 38/357 revolver of one form/brand or another!
Happy shooting one and all! Stand up for that freedom!!

Though the poll choices are a bit, ummm......eclectic?..........the thread still has relevance.

Back in my day the S&W revolver was the king. Once the auto loaders became more reliable (auto loaders other than the 1911 & Hi-Power) ,the revolvers started to loose ground to auto's.

I voted the 1911 ,but to be honest I think that came about in the last 20 years.

The title says THE most popular handgun so I voted S&W revolver because I feel it is the most popular handgun but my most favorite is the 1911. I'd be curious to know which has sold more over the years, all S&W revolvers versus all 1911s?

falnovice
October 6, 2012, 07:42 PM
I believe the OP wanted people to select their own most popular handgun.

Regarding the production volume, I would be interested too. I would guess the S&W revolvers had a lot more volume. The current explosion in 1911's has only been going on for a decade or so. Previous to that there wasn't too many people making them other than Colt. And over the years there were a lot of former military guns on the market.

A quick search suggests that S&W made over 6 million M&P (Model 10) revolvers, and were exported all over the world.
They made a lot of Model 19's as well.

I find it hard to believe that there are more than 6 million 1911's out there. I believe we were the only major military to adopt it. While it saw some use in Argentina and Brazil I don't believe it ever made a lot of headway in the police market.

Shot for shot, I would have to say a Ruger semi-auto 22 pistol which I have several. I enjoy shooting a DA revolver more, but seldom actually shoot as many rounds.

I have more carry time with the Ruger SP101 than anything else, and sometimes carry more than one at a time. I have said plenty of times that if I could have only one handgun, it would be a Ruger GP100. So, according to the OP's guidelines, "Ruger DA revolver" is the best answer.

The fact that we have to remind people that Colt used to make some of the best double action revolvers on the market? I can't even vote because of it. Well if I could it would be the medium frame 38/357 Colt double actions of yesteryear that I own too many to even count.

falnovice
October 7, 2012, 01:16 PM
they made 6 million 1911's for the 2 world wars, bud

Not even close.

We didn't even make 6 million M1 Garands durring WWII.
Where are you getting your numbers from?

Regarding Glock, last time I checked their total production for all models wasn't close to 6 million.
Regarding the M10, I wasn't saying it was the most common pistol in the world. I was repsonding to Larry's post wondering if there had been more S&W revolvers sold than 1911's. I gave that number on just one Model to give perspective.

To the best of my knowledge the most common pistol in the world is the Browning Hi Power and it's clones at 11+ million.

I wouldn't be surpirsed to learn that total S&W revolver production trumps that.

they made 6 million 1911's for the 2 world wars, bud
and 2 million more commercially, or so I gather, counting all brands. So, no, the M10 is not first. In fact, Glock claims to have sold more M17's than that.
Your numbers are way off bud,

I have most on the list but the one I shoot the most is my Ruger .22. It goes to the range and gets shot pretty much every time I go no matter what else I might be shooting that day.
