The recent thread about the J. C. Higgins Model 50 caught my attention. I took my Model 50 out to sight in the scope a couple of weekends ago. I really wasn't planning to use the gun to hunt with this year, so the ammunition I grabbed was M2 Ball from the CMP. It is marked LC69. I didn't expect great accuracy, but take a look........ Yes, that is a dime next to the 3/8" three shot group.

Now in all fairness, I have to tell you that I fired that group at 50 yards, but still...... a 3/8 inch group at 50 yards ain't half bad for a light sporter in 30-06 with any ammo, much less 35 year-old surplus machine gun fodder.

I 'inherited' into a supply of old Lake City Match ammo recently:

1966-1969, plus one case of 1980s stuff. I love this stuff!

Gotta love Lake City ammo and the CMP.

That J.C. Higgins rifle was a hybrid, but a good one. The action was made by FN, folks who know a bit about making Mauser actions, and the barrel was made by High Standard, who made some pretty good barrels. Maybe not a thoroughbred, but one darn fine gun.

Do you have any idea what the hole spacing measures out to be for your scope bases?

Mine measure about .861" front and rear. Completely different than what's on the market for FN Mausers.

I spent about 1/2 hour on the phone with Bill, the tech guy from Millett. He is about as stumped as I am. All the listings say that the FN mounts should work.

That is a Redfield JR base on the rifle. I removed it when I prepped the barreled action for rebluing, and I found 3 holes in the rear bridge! Someone had apparently punted in the quest to find a mount that fits, and he just drilled another hole to fit the Redfield base. It works and it covers up the holes, so I don't worry about it. I paid exactly $80 for the rifle complete with base (and rings, which I replaced). The blue job cost me $40, the stock is an MPI that I got on sale for $120, the pad is a Decelerator, and the scope is a Trashco that came as part of a package deal from Midway. In other words, I can't gripe about the cost of the gun.
