OK guys, I'll be hunting gobblers this year for the first time but before I do the club I belong to is going to be putting on a couple of Turkey Shoots. What brand/model of choke tube do you recommend to keep me in the running? I used to have an old Undertaker but it was lost in a move. The gun is a Remington 870 with Rem-Choke threading. All suggestions welcome!

Thanks,
Mike

I'm no hard core Gobbler fanatic, but there's a couple tight tubes here for that. A Colonial Extra Full does the job for me in one barrel, and a Remington Super Full (.675") in another. A .690" Full Remchoke that was given to me by HSmith here is an alternative.

You may have an adequate hunting choke already in the Full Choke from Big Green. Pattern with your loads of choice and see.

Turkey Shoots require more constriction than hunting. Carlson's has won a few contests with their tightest, and they are of outstanding quality and reasonable price.

There's more to a turkey choke than constriction and a nifty name. Things to look for include taper, polish and concentricity.

Something to keep in mind about choke tubes and barrels is there is enough variation in bore dia. to the tube that the tube that might shoot well in your 870 might not shoot well in mine.:( I have never had a Remington Extra Full Extended Turkey Tube that would pattern even close to winning anything at a Turkey Shoot. Also you will find that turkey shoots vary in distance from 30 yards to 40 yards. Some guns will be winners at 30 but will not pattern at 40 yards. Also some guns will shoot 9's but not 7 1/2's. If you know what brand of ammo and shot size and the distance they will be shooting its much cheaper to try some patterns before heading off to the shoot.

A friend of mine was a winner about every match several years back till they ran out of Winchester shells and switched to Federals. Though the shot load was the same his Remington 1100 simply stopped patterning period with the Federals. Little things such as this make a big difference between being a winner and a loser! Good luck at the shoot by the way!
