Manufactured in 1986 this is one of Smith & Wesson's first big bore snubbies. This Model 657 is chambered for the powerful 41 magnum cartridge. It has a wide smooth trigger and a target hammer. This one has had rubber boot grips installed for maximum compactness.

I love it! I love it! I love it! :what:
What dash number was this S&W offered as?

BTW - Taken from this site... http://www.calzaretta.com/revolvers.html

Thanks!

There shouldn't be a "dash" after the 657; that revolver was offered as the "657" from 1986 until 1988, then as the "657-1" from 1988 until 1989, then as the "657-2" from 1989 until 1994, etc. The latest version I see in The Std. Catalog of S&W is the 657-4, introduced in 1998. HTH.

The Standard Catalog says they made a run of 200 3" 657s in 1998 (657-4s), but the only other 3"s were made in 1986. They also show the Performance Centre as having made a run of 2 5/8" barrels in 1999, but those are the shortest ones I see listed here. HTH.

The ones made in 1986 were catalogued models. All others were made on a very limited basis for distributors.

When S&W makes a change that effects part interchangeability they issue a dash number. Cataloged items and special runs are given a Product Number to identify them, and it is marked in the end-label on the box.

I think the Product Number of the revolver you illustrated is 103951 (3"/RB/RR/WO) or 3" barrel/round butt/red insert front sight/white outlined rear sight. Made in 1986. It was a factory issue limited run and not cateloged.

Being manufactured in 1986 would make this particular guin a 657 (no dash)
It seems that the vast majority of 3" models were made in 1986.
However I have seen one 3" 657 that had a 657-2 frame marking.

SDC, the 657-4 had the MIM trigger & hammer with the firing pin in the frame instead of on the hammer as the pictured has. I believe there were also unfluted with full lugs.
