Ordered a No4 Mk1 yesterday and today did some searching for ammo. I'd like to know whats going on at this forrum. I found 1 REPEAT 1 box for $20,
and one add from 4 gun magazines searched (cant remember the names off hand).

Would you people who wax poetic on the great prices and quantity of .303 ammo please tell me in what mags or where online I can get good deals, 'cause theres squat in my part of Southern Wisconsin.

I'm considering rechambering to 7.62x39 if I cant find reasonable .303.:banghead:

I have no troubles finding .303 at gunshows. I pay usually about $7.00 for a box of 32. Aim Surplus has a 32 round box for $4.95.

Century has PMP new production .303 in reloadable brass. I bought a case of the stuff and love it.

From all I've heard you should stay away from the POF (Pakistani) surplus that AIM is selling.

Hey No4Mk1, what was the shipping cost on a case of .303 from Century?

Try finding some Sellier & Bellot FMJ. It shoots to point of aim out to 900+ yards and feeds well. Doesn't cost much either.

I concur with the post to stay away from the Pakistani 303. Sportsman's Guide and AIM both sell it...probably others.

Best case accuracy I've seen from it is 6" at 100 yards.

It does have an entertainment factor, however. It has this interesting variable delayed ignition mechanism. Pull the trigger and wait...some go off immediately, some a split second later, others may wait up to a 1/2 a second to fire. Cool...what technology those Pakistani's have in that ammo plant.

I generally use the British Mk. VII in the 32 round boxes for $7.00. Good stuff, and I figure that's what they were made to shoot.
Also, the best accuracy I've gotten from both my No.1 Mk.III's is with the Portugese-made FNM - Great stuff! Reloadable cases too. I got a few boxes from Sportsman's Guide a few years back, and would like to find more.
I found some zip-bagged 1944-dated .303 at the gunshow, and bought a couple bags, expecting the "click-bang" a buddy had with old ammo. I got lucky - it all went "BANG!" I'd swear the vendor musta tumbled it though - it sure was bright and pretty too.
Wally Mart used to carry the Rem/UMC .303 hunting ammo - but they don't seem to carry it locally anymore. Accuracy was Minute-of-Deer, not bad but not great.

Check out area gunshops. I found a 50-rd box of what apparently is 1950's vintage Iraqi ammo. Guy wanted $10/box, so I bought them both.

Still deciding on whether to save a box or not though.

Try here: http://www.sportsmansguide.com/browse/browse.asp?c=96&s=917&p=s&bt=

I like Sportmans Guide. Usually close to the cheapest in price, and when shipping is added, the best. And they don't require you to send in age verification.

Gotta second the PMP from Century recommendation. I fired some in my Enfields, and it was clean and accurate. Didn't cost too much, either. IIRC, about $6 a box, plus $12 for shipping. Can't beat that with a stick.

I dunno - I'm getting the PMC 174gr FMJ @ Midway for around $9/box + shipping. It's a LOT more accurate in my Mk4 than the PMP stuff.....

There is unquestionably a lack of quality surplus .303 right now. For years, Greek HXP and South African PMP surp was everywhere...and it was GREAT ammo.

That has dried up a bit, and we're left with some bad old corrosive. But, remember that years ago good 8mm was just as hard to come by. It happens.

Rumor has it that Turkey is releasing some Brit stuff, and more South African has been located although probably won't be $7 per 50 like it was before.

Keep the faith.

when did century start charging for shipping ammo...or anything for that matter? that was one of the big draws, for me anyway, was that shipping was included in their price. the only one unhappy is the guy in the BBT who has to lug the boxes up to the house. (5k rounds of 7.62x51mm gets realy heavy)

i've had good luck with PMP too...but with reloadable brass, i only bought 300 rounds, mixed SP and FMJ

BryanP, it has been so long that I really don't remember, but for some reason the $12 figure mentioned above (for a case) seems to stick in my head. Like 9mmepiphany, I bought a case worth, and have since been reloading the cases so I haven't bought any more yet. I guess in a few years when I shoot out all these cases I'll need some more....:)

just to let folks know.....

Century and Midway are dry holes with regard to 174gr loads right now....

of the fairly reasonably priced sources of .303 174 FMJs ONLY Spotsman's warehouse seems to have anything (S&B at $8.17 a box).

century said they will not be receiving thier new stock of PMP .303 till sometime around mid to late december, when i called to check on MY order this morning. decided to check on things when i saw that they had not yet charged my account for the ammo. guy told me "oh we've been out of that for a few weeks now... didn't you get an e-mail telling you it was back ordered?" Hwck no i didn't get any such thing, if i had i'd have canceled as soon as i got it and ordered elsewhere so i could have had my Ammo!! (was hoping to have fodder in hand to take to the Houston THR shoot this weekend, and last i looked no one in town had Non-hunting/less than $20 a box .303 loads on hand) :banghead:

RIght now, Cheaper Than Dirt has the Remmy/UMC for $8.77/20.

Not really a fan of UMC ammo, but it is available.

J&G Sales also has some POF made corrosive surplus, and some Sellier & Bellot modern stuff (non-corrosive)

I've had good luck with the UMC stuff in my Mk4 - accurate, reasonably clean, relatively cheap.

Thanks for the warning Detritus. I'm okay on .303 for now - I ran across a guy at the gun show selling Greek surplus .303. Non-corrosive, boxer primed, $17 for a box of 48. I bought 6 boxes because that's all he had. That should last me until Century restocks on the PMP and I can order a case from them.
