Snake Eyes October 25, 2004, 07:08 PM Good Buy!! If it is in any kind of shape at all, an excellent deal!
Post the first 4 of the serial number here and either myself or Dfariswheel (or others) will give you a date. Or, you could go out and buy your OWN little blue Colt book!
Oh yeah....Post some pics too!
Congratulations.

Standing Wolf October 25, 2004, 08:27 PM You didn't buy it: you stole it.
iluvG.R.I.T.S October 25, 2004, 08:39 PM Well its about time somebody gets over on them like theve been doing us. LOL
iluvG.R.I.T.S October 25, 2004, 08:44 PM He also had a trooper for 375. It was in perfect condition
tc300mag1 October 25, 2004, 08:46 PM Man i would have loved to get a trooper for that Price
stans October 25, 2004, 09:30 PM I got a six inch blued Python with at least 95% of the finish remaining for $425, but that was several years ago. Also got an eight inch on with about 98% of the blue remaining for $450 about six months before getting the six incher. It is really hard to find Pythons at these prices these days.
Snake Eyes October 26, 2004, 02:23 AM GRITS--
The Colt little blue book is officially titled Colt's Dates of Manufacture by R.L. Wilson. It covers all Colts manufactured from 1837 to 1978 by model and serial number. I see in my copy that it is published with the permission of Simon & Schuster, possibly by copyright holder David Madis. I get mine at the local well-stocked gun store. It's about the size and color of a US passport.
There is also a publication called Dates of Manufacture: Colt Sporting Firearms, put out by Firing Pin Enterprizes (http://www.firingpin.com). I find this one difficult to use, and I question its accuracy.
Frankly, with dfariswheel around, I don't have much use for any Colt reference material. The man is a fount of Colt knowledge.
dfariswheel October 26, 2004, 07:55 PM Whoa, Thanks for the confidence.
There's another good source of serial number and production info.
That's R.L. Wilson's book "Colt: An American Heritage".
Colt considers this to be the "Official" production history of Colt firearms.
The book shows pictures and brief descriptions of EVERY Colt firearm model produced from 1836 to 1985.
Most of the models shown are profusely engraved and inlaid show models.
In the back of the book is all known serial number and production info up to the publication date in 1985.
You can buy this book from most book sellers, often discounted.
4v50 Gary October 26, 2004, 08:21 PM $425 is excellent. Kudos to the sharp shopper.
TamThompson October 28, 2004, 06:43 PM Actually, dfariswheel, if you wouldn't mind taking another peek at your book, I bought a used Python yesterday at a local gun store for about $875, 6" barrel, synthetic ergo grips, stainless finish. Serial number is PE01293. You'll be helping a nice lady (me!) out.
Thanks,
dfariswheel October 28, 2004, 07:25 PM Sorry, that's a Post-1985 gun.
The publicly available numbers end with 1985.
To get a production date, just call Colt. They will give dates over the phone, but NO other info.
iluvG.R.I.T.S October 29, 2004, 06:07 PM thanks agian for the help. http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-2/657161/python.jpg
stans October 30, 2004, 07:45 AM Serial number is PE01293
Based solely upon information that I have been gathering from other posts, PFO1523 was known to be 1997 production, I would surmize that PEO1293 is probably 1996 or thereabouts.
Poohgyrr October 31, 2004, 10:25 PM A terrific deal. Congrats. My checkbook is glad I haven't found a bargain like you did.
