I spent the night on the range with my new hobby - high speed ballistic photography.
Hope you guys enjoy the pics just as much as I enjoyed making them... :D
(Yes, that the bullet caught on camera.)

One comment, to sharpen up your picture of the bullet in flight, the trick is to follow the bullet with the camera. Background will blur, but bullet will be in sharp detail.;)

Do you have some webspace to post a hi-res version of the revolver pic? I'd love to use it as wallpaper.
Can you email me a hi-res version if you don't have the webspace?
Thanks!

I'd love to know more about the techy side of this. Does it take a special kind of camera?
I assume that the lighting setup is pretty intense since the exposure time must be amazingly short.

October 26, 2004, 05:05 AM
Thanks guys!
I used a Canon 10D digital SLR camera with flash and a piezo-electric sound trigger. The exposition time was around 0,02 millisec, unfortunately not short enough to freeze the bullet. (Only a $5000 microflash can do that.) The shots were made in complete darkness - the range master was a bit uneasy about that, but we used extra safety measures.
The 1st gun is a FÉG ACK .45ACP pistol shooting FMJ.
The 2nd is a russian made MCM (or Margolin) .22LR pistol with high velocity ammo.
(It's cheap and beats the tar out of *any* target pistol under $1500 in terms of accuracy.)
The 3rd is a SW 640 in .38spec.
The ammo was some kind of Fiocchi JHP I think.
More (STI Edge, P7, P228 and so) coming soon...

very nice... was wondering how you timed it.
i got some daytime ones.. i was mostly going for frozen brass in the air...but good side effect. Yours on the other hand friggin RULE!
canon 20D 1/3200 so at 1200fps the bullet travleled 4.5ish inches in the photo.

Excellent! I like the wheelgun too.
On the daytime pic, I don't think I've ever seen a bullet trace from the side like that.
All are great pics.

Thanks, Griz

The wheelgun pic shows beautifully why it's important to grease the chamber in blockpowder revolvers, that's a nasty chainfire waiting to happen otherwise :)
Black powder photography? I wonder what the min shutter speed on my Nikkormat FTN is (or if it matters, mechanical shutter...)
*does the math anyways* .625 milliseconds... I wonder if the mechanical shutter would ruin me?
Gunhead
October 26, 2004, 07:24 AM
mfree,
The shutter speed doesn't matter. All you need is a flash wired to an IR or sound trigger.

It could be a Glock 18, but I think it's just a 17 with one of those thingamabobs that replaces the slide cover plate enabling it to be full auto.
Neat!

I really like the wheelgun pic. What's it look like if you shoot .357 mag?
mattz357

voil, it would look MUCH different if he fired .357! His is an older 640 that is only rated for .38.

GunHead, you said..
"The shots were made in complete darkness - the range master was a bit uneasy about that".
Shmooze him! Crank out a copy of your shots and have them printed on 8" x 10" glossy photo paper.. then offer them to him. This way when you ask to do it again, he probably won't hesitate.. or be apprehensive about giving you the go ahead.
FireStar_M40
P.S. Your photo's? As "Tony the Tiger" would say.. "THEY'RE GREAT!"

to sharpen the bullet you need a shorter flash duration. Are you sure it is on the shortest duration possible?
set the 'film speed' as high as possible, and use the largest aperture that is acceptable. that will minimize the amount of light that is required from the flash. a flash adjusts its output by changing the duration of the flash. less light needed means shorter duration.
or you could buy a dandy 4 nanosecond flash bulb :D they are so fast you can not even see it if you look directly at it.
Gunhead
October 28, 2004, 08:35 AM
45r,
Unfortunately a millionth sec flash costs 8.000-16.000 USD. That would completely freeze the bullet in flight. I have no money for a device like this, but I am in the (slow) process of building one...
What I used is a consumer flash which can produce (depending on the model) 1/20.000-1/50.000 shutter speed equivalent.
mfree
October 28, 2004, 09:16 AM
Couldn't you also slow the bullet by decreasing the angle of the camera shot along the path of the projectile? You'd have to be careful though, too close on one side and you'll shoot the camera and too close on the other and the muzzle blast could obscure your round.
Maybe you could take photos of colibri/super colibri rounds exiting a .22 pistol :)
----
p.s. I wonder if anyone's ever taken ultra slow motion video of a bullet failure, the type where the rotational speed of a bullet leaving the muzzle rips it to shreds?

voil (sic), it would look MUCH different if he fired .357! His is an older 640 that is only rated for .38.Thanks for the FYI (I'm not too knowledgeable about wheel guns yet). But what about a similar revolver that *was* rated for .357?
