I'm writing a research report on the District of Columbia Handgun ban that was just overturned about a month ago.

When was the original ban enacted?

Where can I find statistics such as murders, violent crime with handguns, etc.?

DC is the murder capital of the U.S., has violent crime increased or decreased?

Any other info would be great to get me started. Thanks a ton!

The Bill to reform the D.C. gun laws died in the Senate last month, they are still in effect.

I found out that it was enacted in 1976 and that DC murder rates have steadily climbed since its passing. The House did vote to repeal the ban but I guess the Senate still needs to pass it as well.

To clarify: that's the Republican-controlled Senate that's afraid to do anything to annoy the representatives of the Democratic (sic) party.

To clarify: Senate rules provide that a senator or a group of senators can hold up a bill through filibuster unless there exists a super majority of 60 votes to invoke cloture (end of filibuster). That means that nine or ten Democrats are required to side with the Republicans to get a controversial bill through the Senate.
