JSO to offer free firearms safety demonstration

Jacksonville Sheriff Office says a 19-year-old man was careless with his firearm which led to his death. In Clay County a man was accidently shot by his father while they were cleaning their guns.

Mike MacDonald is a shooting instructor at JSO's gun range. He says these accidents are preventable if the people handling the guns follow some basic rules. "I think the biggest problem is people don't realize they're dealing with a dangerous instrument and they lose sight of what they're doing."

MacDonald says the first rule of thumb is treat all guns as if they're loaded. His system of safety is called "Clear and Verify"- 'clear' your weapon of all ammunition and 'verify' that it's not loaded.

MacDonald adds, "So the first thing we do when we have a pistol is remove the source of ammunition." If the ammunition is is a magazine, take the magazine and put it away, rack the gun twice. The reason is because if two bullets come out that will give us indication the magazine is still in the gun.

You should always keep your ammunition separate from your firearm. If it's loaded, make sure your finger is outside the trigger until you're ready to shoot and think of your muzzle as a laser, wherever you point it, remember, it could be your unintended target.

"You can't eliminate them completely, they are going to be people who don't pay attention when handling firearms and that's when they're the most dangerous" according to MacDonald.

The public is invited to attend a free firearms demonstration at the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Firing Range on March 8th from 8am to Noon. For information call 360-2160.
