SARASOTA, Fla. — A Sarasota man was arrested on an aggravated assault charge Wednesday after he was accused of trying to run down U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris (search) and a group of supporters with his car.

A silver Cadillac sped toward the group at a Sarasota intersection Tuesday evening, then swerved at the last minute before driving off, according to police. Witnesses gave the car's license plate number to police, and they tracked it to Barry M. Seltzer (search), 46.

He came to the police station Wednesday and complained to officers that Harris' supporters had impeded traffic.

"I intimidated them with my car," Seltzer told police.

He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

A call for comment to Harris' campaign secretary was not immediately returned.

Harris, a Sarasota Republican, is seeking a second congressional term after serving as Florida's secretary of state during the protracted 2000 presidential recount (search).

This is clearly a 1st Amendment Freedom of Speech issue and Seltzer's right of dissent must be upheld.

The UF college republicans/Gators for Bush have done this every weekend. Of course we get tons of hecklers, but mostly good thumbs up and honks and police/firemen hitting their lights for us. However, we have had one group (Pink Coats?, men, possibly homosexuals in pink trench type coats that are very left wing, ive heard them called pink coats and apparently they were starting with police in South Florida as well) pie our club president during a rally we had and one of them showed up a few weeks ago and told him they are going to "drive by him with AK-47s" and make sure he ends up dead...they never did anything (liberals with guns? they should make a more believable story!) and we had a few CCW people that day that were informed to be be at a hightened state of alert. A few of my friends that have gone lately with us have had our ARs in the trunks and everyone legally allowed carries just to be safe.

A call for comment to Harris' campaign secretary was not immediately returned. Did they make a comment to the paper, but not immediately? Have they not had a chance yet?

Your typical Kerry supporter in action.

The phrase "A call to ___ for comment was not immediately returned" is the latest bit of journalistic idiocy to come down the pike. It has almost universally relaced the old "Calls to ___ for comment had not been returned by press time," which actually said something. The new version always conjures up images of a reporter calling ___ and leaving a message that says "Hello, this is Max Grubb from the Evening Flush and we need your side of the story within 15 seconds or we're going to run without it." <CLICK>

"Five -- four -- three -- two -- one. OKAY, PEOPLE, HE DIDN'T CALL BACK IMMEDIATELY, PRINT WHATEVER LIES YOU WANT!"

There was a time, rumour has it, when words meant certain things. "Immediately" meant "right away," not "by the time we put the evening edition to bed."
