called my local gunshop and they say they can get one, but reading various threads on THR would indicate that they are not Cali legal.

What is the truth of the matter?

Thanks,

H2L

My understanding (so take it with a grain of salt) is that all firearms built on the AK receiver are banned from CA.

Short answer: All Saiga's are illegal in CA.

I think that's right.

"Kalashnikov USA Hunter Rifle / Saiga"

is specifically listed here:

Everyone here is so silly! Don't you guys know that moderate-power semi-auto rifles made out of stamped sheet metal that are capable of only reasonable accuracy are evil? I mean, the military uses them so that must mean they make people deader than, say, a .30-30! I doubt it has anything to do with the fact that the military has a specific application for them (mid-range battles) and that they are probably inexpensive to make. No, no - it has to be because they are super-powerful and ultra-ultra deadly!

The California myth that a rifle based on the AK-47 series platform is the equivalent of a mystical death ray dates back to 1989 when Comrade Attorney General Van de Kamp strode into a joint session of the state legislature holding an AK-47 series rifle. He claimed he could kill all 120 assembly persons and state senators in twenty seconds.

Comrade Attorney General Van de Kamp was of course pimping for the Roberti-Roos Assault Weapons Control Act which became state law shortly afterwards.

When determining a weapon's legality in Kalifornistan, please refer to the following guide...

A.) is it useful?
B.) is it cool and fun?

If the answer to either question is "yes," then the weapon is illegal.

Thank you, now BOHICA.

QuarterBoreGunner,

I love your sig line about the safe. I need to make use of it with my wife.

(mental note to self: buy big safe so this excuse seems plausible)

Another Californian gets his hopes dashed over the Saiga. I went through the same thing about 2 years ago.

You can't own any decent semi-auto rifle. But you can own an M1 garand, a mini-14 and a mini-30. Go figure.

Don't forget the M1A! Oh wait, you said decent... :D

I like my SU-16!

The Garand shoots friendly bullets. The Saiga shoots mean, evil, baby killer bullets.

When you think about the stupidity of our gun laws and how ridiculous they are, it makes you shudder to think about other areas of our lives that they are incompetently passing laws about.

Sacramento idiots.
