Whats up with Winchester?

I have a major question about Winchester (maybe more than one question).

It seems to me that Winchester is actually 2 companies - ammunition and guns.

Furthermore, it seems that the ammunition company, owned by Olin, is the real Winchester company, and that the firearms company is simply a Browning owned license. Is this true?

So Browning makes all the new "Winchester" guns in Japan - and thats why they say "license" in really small letters under Winchester.

When did Winchester guns get bought by Browning? When did they start making the guns over in Japan? Are all new Winchesters actually Browning designs?

How come I can't find this information anywhere else?

Winchester 70s, 1200s and 94s are made in the US by USRAC, licensee of the Winchester trademark from Olin Winchester

95s, 92s, 86s and semi shoguns are made in Japan by Miroku for USA Repeating Arms.

Winchester Supreeme Over Unders are made by FN in Belgium for Winchester. FN also makes high grade Browning Shtguns and rifles, ie superposeds and over unders...Miroku makes all other Browning guns, excpet the high grade Citoris and 22 autos and anyhting else requiring engraving, which are started in Japan and finished in Belgium.

FN, Browning and Wincheser are all branches of the same company. They also own a stake in Miroku...

Just as an aside, any gun made by Miroku (ie a Browning or Winchester) will generally have the best qc of any firearm out there, bar none.

Last I heard the majority owner of FN was the Walloon regional goverment of Belgium. IIRC they bought Winchester in 1989.

The Herstal Group of Belgium owns them all. :)

They are estimated to do over $400 million/yr...it's good to be the king.
