I have the Frobus version. I like it, but the jury is still out as to it's effectiveness.

I like 'em on the carbines and M4s, but they look kinda dumb on 20" versions. I like mine (Knights) but I'm still trying to get used to it....doesn't seem as fast to me as standard handguards.

I can see how it would work for controling flip in full-auto fire.

I had one on for about a year. It makes it more difficult to shoot over barriers, sandbags, etc. It is awkward from the shoulder or from the hip. You can't make a grip that feels good both ways. You also have less control over the boreline. With your hands on the handguard, you have a natural pointability you cannot duplicate with a PG. It makes the gun larger and more ungainly. It does look cool though.

To tell you the truth, the sandbag situation is the main reason. I just couldn't set the gun anywhere. I had a slightly forward facing grip of my own design. It felt really good from the shoulder, but it was not as quick to point-shoot as without the foregrip.

Get a forend that allows side mounting, ala STERLING SUB MACHINE GUN...:D

For general purpose...NAY.

I think they are very neat, but they make just one more item to snag onto. With shorty handguards you are forced into using the vertical front grip. There are times when you are more comfortable using the handguards, especially with longer shots. The midlength and standard length HGs are a bit better for hand room.

I have one on my Mid Length 9mm and it's fine for shooting and looking cool, but if things got nasty I'd just as soon lose the thing. The one I have has a solid aluminum locking pin. I'm thinking drilling it out and replacing it with a plastic pin that will shear on a hard impact. I'd rather have a sheared plastic pin than risk damaging my barrel nut or handguard.

Depends.

I like them for slinging the gun around in fast, close shooting. For other purposes, they just seem to get in the way.

Since I never could pass up a challenge in high school, I shattered my right wrist racing my dad's motorcycle. Now, I can't turn my wrist much past 90%, and certainly not "palm up". All I can do without a VFG is to rest the forend between my thumb and index finger.

I use the Fobus handguards, but a more Knights-looking foregrip. It makes all the difference in the world. It helps me so much, that I've considered adapting a rail to the underside some of my other rifles so I could attach a VFG and "get a grip".

One thing though, I keep it almost all the way back toward the magwell (only 2 slots left). This gives plenty of room forward to use the forend, or to sandbag, etc.

Bushmaster makes a very functional (but ugly) looking VFG that folds when not in use, ala Steyr AUG. That might be an even better option... but it sure is ugly!
