I know a cop who has a sawed off double barrel SG (12" I think). I thought it would be fun to have a sawed off SG, say a 14" pump or so with a pitsol or club grip. I am willing to pay the $200 BOHICA NFA tax for it. What kind of price am I going to find for such a SG? I would be satasfied with a 500 or 870 just with a short barrel. Would it be safe to say that such a critter could be had for $200 + NFA fees?

Is there a way to buy a 500 or 870 and cut it off myself and get a NFA stamp for it?

I want to keep all of this 100% legal as it would be a nice CCW.

Yes EASILY, and 200 would be premium price. The market guns like that can be sold in is TINY so the prices are still very reasonable. Most guys would just chop their own gun off and register IT rather than buy one.

EDIT: Involve the ATF BEFORE CUTTING!!!! You basically ask them for permission to pay the tax for a chopped gun, they say yes and you chop it and register it.

2 suggestions

First as mentioned below you can chop it yourself after getting permitiom and paying the tax to the atf. Then you can do it yourself but and have a gunsmith mount new sights and clean it up a little. You also have to engrave your name and city and state on it. This is creating a short barrel shotgun.

The second route is AOW which stands for any other weapon. I don't know if you can create these yourself but it is only a five dollar tax. As this pertains to a shotgun it would mean any shotgun that you sawed off that has never in its life had a full butstock. Only pistolgrip. For the more part this would limit you to wichester and mossberg (there are a very few remington).

How about one of these (http://www.serbu.com/shorty.htm) fitted with one of these (http://www.knoxx.com/product/sidewinder.html)?

What you need to do is acquire the gun you want to register. You then submit an ATF Form 1 along with the transfer fee. Since you are doing this yourself, go ahead and buy a shotgun with a pistol grip (and one that has never had a full stock attached) and as mentioned above, it will be considered an AOW and only costs $5 to register.

When the forms come back approved, you can then cut the barrel yourself.

If you'd rather a gunsmith do it, if the barrel comes off easily, like on the 870, you can send the barrel to be cut.

If you buy one that the barrel is a pain to remove, you can personally take the shotgun to a gunsmith and have him cut it while you are physically standing there with the gun. If you need to ship it to or leave it with a gunsmith to cut, you can fill out an ATF Form 5 and ship the gun to him. After he is finished, he can then do a Form 5 and ship it directly back to you.

Couple corrections.

For you to make an AOW the registration tax stamp on a form 1 is still $200. To later transfer it to someone would then be $5.

Only a Class 2 manufacturer can make an AOW with no tax and then transfer it for $5.

You do not need a form 5 to send a NFA weapon to a gunsmith.

If you plan on making the gun yourself you might as well do a short barrelled shotgun rather than an AOW. The tax is the same and it gives you the option of attaching a stock or just a pistol grip.

Ooops. Yep, your right about the $5.

The last time I sent a NFA firearm to a gunsmith, we did do Form 5's.
