Thinking about getting a G19.
Should I get one Comped or not?
Opinions please.

I wouldn't get a comped 9x19 service/carry, no way no how. Silly wabbit, porting and comping is for game guns, not service guns.

And here's my answer. If it's a range gun, sure, why not. If you're carrying it or using it for home defense, I wouldn't. Those pretty pictures of flames flying out the ports in the Glock ads won't be good if/when you're shooting at someone at night. And 9mm recoil isn't particularly all that harsh to start.

I don't feel that porting has a place on a defensive handgun, what's going to happen if you have to fire the weapon while it is held close to your body? Where are those gasses going? Up and towards your face.

On a range gun or a gun used in IPSC porting is just fine if you like that sort of thing.

Not.

I would never consider porting a defensive gun.

Well in a 9mm the ports don't do much constructive. They will shoot fire and make excessive noise. Had a ported 10mm where the porting made some useful difference in muzzle flip. But it shot lots of fire and was terribly loud.

Bottom line, no don't do it. Bad idea.

Another option is to go ahead and pick up the 19C, and pick up a non-ported barrel to drop in as you see fit. This will give you the option to fire the gun either way. I've got a 22C and I picked up replacement barrels in both .40 and .357Sig. I fire the gun both ways (ported & non-ported) so that I am used to the way the gun handles in any form. There is something wicked about the flames shooting straight up from the ports, especially in the .357Sig set-up.

All but one of my carry guns are ported, and it's one I hardly ever carry.

I'm not a fan of the ported guns...especially from a barrel as short as the one in the G19 & in 9mm! ;)

Shooting in pectoral index + Ports = OUCH
