So, if you were lazy and wanted to have an extra day to getting around to cleaning, or um... if you wanted to leave a cap-n-ball in a loaded condition -- are any of the modern black powder substitutes safe to do this with?

Or would I need to play Hickock and fire/clean/reload the thing every day to keep it hot?

Hodgden's 777 is pretty close to being non-corrosive, but still it's not like nitrocellulose. It still needs to be cleaned. I left my Omega dirty with 777 fouling all last season, almost a month, just to see how it did. The gun cleaned up just fine, with no spots or pitting present. I also left the gun loaded for almost two weeks, and it still went bang. How long are you talking about leaving it loaded for??

American Pioneer's powder is supposely about non-corrosive too. Might be worth a look.

and Cap N Ball pistol loaded with BP all Deer season if I don't shoot anything. Keeping it loaded is not a problem becuase it does not hurt anything. Once I shoot it, I will swab bore with Bore Butter and clean that evening.

I use 777 in my .54 GPR. I left it basically uncleaned for the summer. After shooting sessions I would swab the bore with patches until they came out relatively clean then coated the bore with Bore Butter. No rust or discloration and I live in a marine environment.
777 isn't maintenance free but it's considerably less so than BP or Pyrodex.

I like Clean Shot. It is accurate when the right load is found. Ill shoot, bring it home, and sometimes wont clean the rifle for 2 months, and it never has rusted it at all.
