Cz-p-01

I've been wanting one of these things for over a year now. When the chance to get one came up, I jumped on it. Coming in from West Virginia, it was a long long wait.
Yesterday I checked shipping and found that my P-01 arrived. I ran out to get to get it pronto. When I got there, I found that I had enough cash for the transfer the gun but not enough for a box of ammo. Crap!
So here I am, fondling this awesome handgun – and I can’t shoot it because I poured all my 9MM into the Baby Eagles. So I am flat broke, out of ammo (9MM) and I’m just itching to go shoot this thing!
The one I looked at before had some wood grips on it, and it looked nice. And it felt really nice too. I fell in love with the P-01 right there. This gun arrived, still in the plastic, still in the sticky goo. That’s what you call brand new. I don’t think anyone has even touched the gun since it was boxed up in the Czech Republic. The gun comes with checkered soft rubber grips that are contoured very nicely to fit ones hand perfectly. In my hand, it’s an absolute perfect fit. No, I’m not going to get Hakan grips for it – these are perfect. I will have to get a stainless steel guide rod from 12 Volt.
The gun points better than I remember, feels better than I remember. The decocker lever that is in the position of a traditional thumb safety is designed to allow a very high grip while staying out of the way and not risking an accidental decock under stress. It might look odd in pictures, but once you take a shooting grip, you will see what I mean. This is different, and different is good. All the controls are located properly and work as advertised. Cycling the action by hand, it feels smooth and sure… solid. It will feel even better once I get the packing grease out of the gun, clean it up and lube it properly.
This compact CZ also fits perfectly into my old trusty High Desert Leather belt slide… like it’s been waiting for it. But I think I’m going to have to order a good scabbard for it from HBE. If this gun shoots as good as it looks, fits, feels… oh man.
I think I may have just reached Handgun Heaven… Velocity Valhalla. This will be the subject of my next review article I write.
The only downside is that this thing came with 2 10 rounders so I'll have to get some regular mags for it.

Congrats on your new purchase George :) Sounds like you've found what you've been looking for :)
SS guide rod will definetely make some difference, it made for my full size CZ75 B.Good choice of holster for that baby...let me know if change your mind about using rubber...grips ;)

What is it with this new CZ??
I do not pay any attention to CZ's because, without exception, the grips of them are to big for my hand. On the .45 model, I cannot even reach the trigger!! Whch leads me to this. If the awesome thing about this gun is that the girth of the butt stock has been significantly reduced, then, HUZZAH!!! I may be interested! :D

The PO1 is perfect. I put away the Witness 40 I had been carrying for 13+ years right after I shot my PO1. This is my all the time everything pistol. Well done.

GH, Congrats. I want one so bad I can taste it. I was even willing to trade my XD for it, but trade in price is a joke at best at the shop that does it locally. I just need to buckle down and save.
denfoote:
If you had trouble reaching the trigger on a 75B, I doubt the P-01 will be much better for you. The grip on the P-01 is in the same place as the 75B, but it is a little wider now. The P-01 does have a new curved trigger though to help with reach and pull feel. Play with one in a shop and see what you think.

The trigger reach is better on the P-01.
I found it easier to reach and squeeze although I have no trouble with the 75B's stock trigger.
I'm debating between a P-01 and a S&W 1076 right now. The P-01 would make a great carry weapon, but 10mm is my newest obsession.

P01s are awesome. I want one badly.
You ought to look at HBE's new "wicked" holster -- http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=108220 -- a holster that really matches the gun's lines, IMO.

denfoote, you must have small hands or short fingers or something... for me, the P-01's stock grips are like I've squeezed a lump of clay. Reach to the trigger, even in DA mode is just about perfect. In SA mode, it's very short.
I get paid tomorrow... have to wait till I can go shooting. Arrrggghhh!! I hate that!

George,
You need to czech out the ProMag CZ75 COMPACT 40 S&W 10RD BLU mags as sold by Natchez Shooters Supply. Stock number ZMMAG12. I currently have 6 of these that I use with both my CZ P-01 and my CZ 40P. They fit perfectly and have functioned flawlessly. Holds 14 rounds of 9mm.
Natchez currently has them listed as in-stock for $11.42 each.
BTW, my P-01 rides in one of Eric's belt holsters. Nothing better.

I bought a P01 for my son when they first came out.
He's 15, (Yikes! He's 16 tomorrow!) lives in NY with his mother, and loves shooting. Whenever he comes down here to visit, I try to get him to go to Orlanda, or NASA, someplace like that, but he just wants to go to the range, so I thought I would get him a gun he can call his own.
We discussed various brands, and with some guidance from me, he decided on the P01. They were just hitting the stores then, so I grabbed one. When he came down, several months later, both he and I got to shoot it.
It handles recoil beautifully, comes back on target easily. George is right: everything is in the right place. There aren't many guns that have that feel. After just a mag or two it had your total confidence that it's just "right." To me, SIGs have it, 1911's have it, and the P01 has it. Together, we put about 300 rounds through it (about 250/50 him to me) and I was thrilled that it was such a quality piece, and that he enjoyed it so much.
..Joe
PS: George- Think it's tough waiting a few days to afford ammo to shoot it? I told my boy that because it's his, I won't shoot it unless he's here with me. He told me to go ahead and shoot it whenever I want, but I don't because it's his, and I want him to know that, so it's a safe queen except for a couple of weeks each year. How tough do you think it is NOT to shoot it? :)

Yup! I just love my PCR to pieces. I would like to get a P-01 trigger for it, but that's not a pressing issue. Mine rides in either a High Noon Hidden Impact or a Hidden Ally. Honestly, other than a recurring longing for something in .45 caliber, and perhaps bigger/brighter sights (XS Big Dots, anyone?) I am utterly happy with it.

Good buy George. It's my first pistol, got 2 more pistols (G19 & Kahr MK9)after it and I still love the P-01 the most. I use it almost everyday for duty use and it's range time is 3 fold of that of the others: no disrespect to them. The P-01 sits above anything I've shot so far. The steel guide rod is worth picking up, trust.

I had one and loved the way it shot, but hated the way it carried. For some reason, I had a heck of a time with the grip printing really badly. I don't seem to have the same problem with the 75B :scrutiny: .
I just wish that CZ would come out with an alloy framed CZ75B Compact. That would be perfect to me.
Congratulations on your purchase though, they are really great guns.

I've been missing mine for a while now. I sold it about a year ago and have regretted it ever since. I may just have to go out and get another one. Right now, I'm also looking at the p-40. They are interesting but a little longer on the front. It tends to ruin the lines a little but having a .40 in that package may well be worth the asthetic problems.

My truck gun is an H&K P2000 .40 S&W that cost twice as much as my P-01..
While I like the H&K it doesnt feel as good in the hand or point like the P-01 does...
Its a good shooter but I'm more accurate with the P-01...
If it wasnt for the ambi features of the H&K and the .40 I would rather carry the P-01...
I have just as much faith in both guns that they will go bang when I need them to....
They have both been flawless!!!!!!!
the P-01 just sits in my safe to be shot once in awhile and to be admired...
The only way I would part with it is if CZ came out with a left hand version of the same gun........drf

IMHO, CZ is the best value in guns today. You can pay more money for a gun, but you won't get more gun for your money.
If you like your new CZ, just wait until you've put 1000 rounds thru it. WOW.:D

Dang dang dang. This is nuts. I've NEVER gone this long without shooting a new gun. I might - MIGHT - be able to go this weekend. Maybe. If the fates smile on me.
I just haven't had time and that's silly considering that I can go 5 minutes in any direction from here and go shooting. Legally. And WalMart sells bulk ammo cheap and I keep targets and earmuffs in my Bronco just in case I have to go shooting.
Aarrgh. Between studying and working and being a Dad - I've just not had a chance. I wanted to go today during my lunch break, but I had to talk to a teacher instead. (Kid's teacher, not mine. Thanks for asking.)
I've papers and exams all week and I've not done enough studying... and when I can chill, Its too late to see your targets because it seems like we only have 4 hours of daylight anymore so I've been playing with SUSE Linux in my spare time.

You can make the full length guide rod pretty easily yourself. (Big words coming from me, I had Black Snowman make one for my 97.)
It rides in a pancake holster made by Eric.
On my To Get List is both a .40 RAMI and a .40 85 Combat, cause that's the closest I can get to a .40 P01.

I think some Makarovs might give it a run for its money. My 75B was kinda rough and gritty at first. The cool thing about CZ's is that they give themselves trigger jobs after several hundred rounds. Mine is better now.

The CZ P-01: I took it out to my firing range and ran a hundred rounds through it. The gun is flawless. It's accurate, comfortable, and a pleasure to shoot. Even for a compact size pistol. I was able to easily shoot this pistol as well as any other full sized gun. Accurately too. From 15 yards, it is hitting about an inch above point of aim. This isn't a problem, I just have to get used to a slightly lower point of aim. At longer ranges it's probably spot on. The recoil from this gun is negligible and hardly noticeable at all. It bucked, but didn't kick me. Felt especially comfortable and light because of the perfect hand to grip fit, high grip position and very low bore-line. Rapid double taps were effortless and both hits were landing pretty close to each other... very nice. This is without a doubt, the pistol that was meant for me. To reinforce that fact, when I opened the gun up I found that the recoil spring was Ogre Green in color. Excellent. A sign from the gods that this weapon was forged for me. This gun is my Excalibur. I've been waiting for this one. I'm extremely pleased with it. I don't know what I could do to improve it... it's accurate enough for me. Smooth enough. The thing is just right. All it needs is the stainless guide rod that is on the way and a worthy scabbard for it to ride in, and a handful of spare full capacity magazines. In all seriousness, I rate this gun on par with SIG and Beretta. I've been a long time CZ fan... my first privately owned centerfire pistol was a CZ clone, a TZ-75. So in some ways, I am just as familiar with the CZ's workings as I am a 1911. If not more so. So this gun, while new to me, was completely familiar and felt right at home. I'm going to have to spend some good quality time finding out just what ammunition would be best for this piece.

Yea, My son just got a PO-1 and he loves it. I only have four CZ75's and a CZ 83. But Ya'll can eat your hearts out. You haven't seen anything yet. Try a CZ 75 Champion. ok, ok, I paid about four times what your PO-1 cost but the first time you dry fire it you'll know your in heaven. and when you close the slide on the first round in the chamber. you'll know. The trigger is around 2 pounds and it will double tap on you in a heart beat. (ok, I know the trigger is a little light.) but after you fire and it doesn't move off the target and after you pick it up and it points natually at the target you'll be sold. And I clean it after each 500 rounds or so, weather it needs it or not. It doesn't seem to be bothered with my 124 gr. lead bullets or my 124 gr. FMJ. accurate, I haven't bothered to bench rest it yet. it's doing every thing I've asked of it to date. (as on blowing a few other shooters away) Some day I'll bench rest the champion and see how accurate it really is.
ok, under a inch at 10 yards. two handed hold. That's all I shoot at. (Five shot groups)

November 8, 2004, 12:38 AM
For 4 times the price, the Champion had better be all that! Come on.
The other CZ I am interested in is the regular 75 length version of the P-01... same frame style and decocker. It's not the BD... the BD doesn't have the frame rail. Not that I need a rail, but the beefier frame make the gun shoot like an IPSC gun with the weights on it.
The only think I could think of doing to the P-01 would be night sights and a trigger job. These sights I have, they have a glow inthe dark kinda paint on the dots. I can shine a light on them and they'll glow for a few minutes... just like the hands on my wristwatch. Kind of a ghetto tritium treatment. Rather useless in my opinion
