There is a very good chance I will be doing a 3-6 month stint in SoCal soon. I left there about 10 yrs ago, so I know there have been some changes.(all restricitve and bad)
I plan on bringing (driving) a couple of pistols with me. Is there anything I really need to know b4 I load them up and head for the range while down there.
( I can't believe I am willingly going back, but, I can double my income for a short period of time.)

HERE (http://caag.state.ca.us/firearms/) is a link to the Ca Dept. of Injustice page where you can find gun laws. A person moving to California with handguns is supposed to register each one withing 60 days, at a cost of $14 per. You are considered a personal handgun importer! Going back and forth to the range - you need to have your handguns in a locked container, with the ammo stored separately. Don't put your firearms in the glove compartment - that's considered a concealed weapon. I just put mine in a gun rug, locked with a luggage lock, ammo and mags separate. Isn't it wonderful? I feel so safe.

Oh, and make sure your mags are unloaded before transport. There have been a few cases of cops busting people because they consider the loaded mag (even when the mag is outside the locked gun case) to be the same as A LOADED GUN.
These cases have been tossed out of court but apparently that word hasn't made it to the street. Better safe than sorry.
Oh, and no mags over 10 rounds, period. You cannot bring them into the state.
Sucks, doesn't it?

The trunk of your car is considered to be a "locked container". Just make sure you have ammo and guns seperate. Be sure to register to vote there so you can sign the recall Gray Davis petition. He's the main reason most of these laws are out there.

On entering the state, you're required to register your handguns (sigh) within...dang, is it 60 days? I forget.
Now, whether or not you do that is up to you. But remember this: should you decide to pack a gun illegally on the street, it's a misdemeanor on the first offense if your record is clean AND THE GUN IS REGISTERED TO YOU, and a felony otherwise.
The only good news: California's knife laws are pretty good. You can carry any size folding knife concealed, so long as it's not true switchblade or Bali-Song. My daily carry has a 5.5" blade. See also:
