How pleasant to see an armored personnel carrier stationed outside of Bowie State College (University?) on MD Route 197 today.

Are the police preparing for something? I don't know anything about these types of vehicles and their exact purposes, but I'd really like to NOT get comfortable seeing them everywhere.

Lenexa, one of the KC suburbs has 2 APCs. I've never seen them myself. I image some of the other cities in the KC metro have one or two as well.

The police department of the little one-horse town of Oskaloosa, KS (about 35 miles west of KC) has an armored car. It looks like one of the ones the Air Force used to have back in the 80's. I reckon they're getting ready for riots in the urban core of Oskaloosa (you could just about slide a frozen turkey all the way across downtown Oski with one shove).

Me personally, I am not a riot kind of guy. I am more of a get drunk kind of guy but hey to each their own. If they want to go throw rocks at the armored vehicles more power to them.

hecks68,

Are you in the central MD area? We need to get together for a shoot!

There was no apparent reason for this APC to be parked where it was.....other than its proximity to the entrance of BSU.

It was there from 0900 until I left the trap range at 1230.

I'm going out to get a six-pack and watch the fun begin

Yeah I live in the area. It's my route to work.

Could have been someone's personal vehicle tryin to make a statement. I think I remember seeing a magnet american flag sticker on the back.

It belongs to the UN. They are anticipating a Kerry win and are making preparations to that effect.

Looks an awful lot like an emasculated Soviet BRDM-2 / BTR-40P-2 or one of its many brothers. Could belong to a collector... Are some cities that obtain APCs for their police buying surplus eastern bloc stuff? Would be cheaper I suppose.

Looks an awful lot like an emasculated Soviet BRDM-2 / BTR-40P-2 or one of its many brothers. Definitely. I would think that a police vehicle would have markings to that effect, and a military vehicle would as well. Looks like some collector's pride and joy.

Its not a collectors toy, its a police vehicle. I saw it one day during its 'working hours'.

One day i am turning onto Fairland off of 29 to get to my former residence and a county police care is blocking my street, parked across it, and the officer is standing beside his car.
He must have been asked this about 500 times in the last 10 minutes, but i asked anyway: "What time will we be able to return to out homes?"
"Right now, you DON'T!" he says.
Which isn't what I asked.
Anyhow, I drive around and find the last 'unguarded' entrance to my subdivision and the last empty space and parked. EVERY singleother space was a police car, marked or unmarked it was easy to tell. Oh, this is funny: guess what my first thought was.......

"Oh ?????, they got the guns!" I thought in that brief instant that a bazillion cops wouldn't be around if they had 'only' gotten my family (who weren't home, anyway, but still...)

Well it turns out that a couple B&E guys were holed up in a house nearby and rumored to have the occupant hostage. They didn't. And it all resolved peacefully. But the HARDWARE was incredible!

They had that armored car driving around, a sniper in a ghillie suit (he looked pretty uncomfortably warm as he dragged that suit back to his car which was right in front of my house), dogs, dogs, dogs, and every officer with his service handgun or rifle. There were at least 50 cops surrounding this place.
Now, alot of them were just standing around talking. Looked like a 'what the hell, let's check it out" kind of thing for a good number of them. but alot of them clearly had an assigned role. Let me tell you, the Montgomery County Law Enforcement community is mechanized and militarized and loaded for bear.

Left a bad taste in my mouth to tell you the truth.

Anyway, the vehicle belonged to them, not a 'collecotr'.

Monkey County had one of those and they still couldn't find 2 white guys in a white box truck with a machinegunsniperrifle?

Somebody needs to check the county budget requests this fiscal year.

Rabbit.

hey, I resemble that remark! haha after the Florida State game there were no less than 4 helicopters, a dozen mounted cops, the PGC police mobile command unit (or whatever they call that motor home with the gigantic antenna), and a few dozen pgc cops around College Park. . . and all for nothing.

0530 Wednesday....I'm getting ready to leave for school/work in Greenbelt. Looks like Dubya pulled it out.....I'm taking a small bag of necessities in case things go FUBAR today. If it's going to happen anywhere it will be in PG County and Baltimore City.

Don't know bout that, fires happen everyday. That section was being renovated too. I don't think everything is a conspiricy.

Nah, just an unfortunate coinidence....probably.

The news has been very reclusive regarding potential causes of the fire though.

Maybe they're just trying to "fuel the fire" so to speak.......hahaha, bad pun
