Hello All,
I have a chance to buy a 19-3. The old P&R 4 inch. Problem is the gun is in "rough" condition. There are several large blotches where rust has been treated. There is a little active rust on the rear sight. Yeah it's been around the block several times. The asking price is $225. On the good side, the lock up is excellent. Gap is about .004. Mechanically it is in great shape, but cosmetically, it draws a vacume.
I know myself well enough to know that I will never send it off somewhere for a full finish restoration. I guess I'm just thinking outloud here. Would you buy it in that condition for that price? I don't have any particular need for it, just always looking for a deal. The same place also has a 686 no dash 4 inch for $300. It's in okay condition. Mechanically very good. Another place in town has a KGP-160 (6 inch no lug) that is mechanically excellent+. It has that "welded to the frame" feel in full lock up. $325.

I recently bought a 19 in very nice condition for $275. I'd consider it if the seller is willing to budge on the price, otherwise, keep looking, enough of them pop up on the used market or consider the 686 you mentioned...although I really recommend the 19, mine is a sweet shooter ;)

I have a 19-3 that was in poor condition when I bought it. Back strap grooves were completely gone and replaced by pitting, blue was worn and scratched, multiple small patches of rust, the interior was pristine. I got mine for $150 and that included a cherry set of Herrets stocks.

After much sole searching, I finally decided that I have the mid bores pretty well covered in my house and that I needed to expand my caliber list. (Yeah right, just what I need... another caliber to load :banghead: ) So I got a Ruger Blackhawk convertable .45C/.45ACP.
The Colt cylinder has that welded to the frame feel, though the ACP cylinder doesn't  . Luckily I have a thousand or two rounds of ACP laying around. Now I need some brass.

Thanks for all the input. I was actually leaning toward the GP since right now all of the wheel guns in the house are 4 inch.

I think your right to pass on that one....

I'm still seeing a fair number of very good or better 19's in the $300 range. Once you figure in the work+ shipping+decreased value due to refinshing, hard to make a case for that particular gun IMHO
