I saw today a model 1892 Winchester in 40-44, serial number approximately in the 164,000 range with a case colored receiver. I don't know enough about old Winchesters to know if the case coloring of the receiver would be original. It had a saddle ring. The barrel, the buttplate and the top of the receiver were blued, but the bluing appeared a different color on each part.

Ejohne, the serial number 'range' you state for the Winchester Model 1892 would indicate it was made around 1898. While bluing was the standard finish, casehardening was available on special order. I would recommend having your favorite gunsmith look at the rifle if you're serious about buying. A poor rebluing job will definitely reduce the value. Hope this helps!
