I am getting ready to buy a like new 686 that has a Millet rear sight that I would like to restore to stock. The S&W website doesn't list a price for the rear sight assembly, but does anyone have any idea what to expect for cost? Thanks!!!

If you can get to a Brownell's catalog; they ought to have the sight. Not sure about price on factory replacement.

Some info to keep in mind when ordering a S&W sight.

First, you have to order a sight with a blade intended for that specific model and barrel length.
As example, the Model 686 2 /12" barrel uses a different sight blade than a 686 6".

Second, there are the old style sights, and the new style. These WILL NOT interchange on the frame. You have to order the correct model for your 686.

Prices: Brownell's sell the old or new model sight assembly for $$47.00 to 54.00.

Again BE SURE about whether you need the old or new style, and the barrel length before ordering.

I checked the parts listing on S&W's website and for rear sight it says "see chart." I can't find any chart and I'm not sure if I need "new" or "old" or what size I need. Does anyone know of this chart or where I may find it? Thanks!

Matt,
Is the front of the sight round or squared off? Under the sight, is the frame drilled and tapped for a scope mount? The old sight has a squared sight and the newer style is rounded on the front. Is the Millet in good shape? Do you have any interest in trading for a stock S&W rear sight? Let me know, I have both styles in like new condition.

Gillster, I won't have it in my hands until the end of next week, but I'll email you as soon as I have it and let you know the details. Thanks for the offer!

I got the 686 on Thursday and the Millet sight is SWEET! As an added bonus, the gun had a trigger job and I didn't even know it!!!

I think I just saw your new gun in another thread. Millett Sights are larger than Smith & Wesson's, set slightly farther back, stronger, better finished, and more finely adjustable. Replacing them with factory stocks would be like putting a Volkswagen motor in a Porsche.

Does anyone know where I can get the contact info for Millett? I didn't see anything on the website and I'd like to get an adjustment screwdriver if one is available. Thanks!

Brownells has both a magna tip bit for the Millett and a seperate tool for adjusting the sight. They are both less then $4.00. Just search Millett on the Brownells start page. Here is the magna-tip bit: Magna-tip (http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=429&title=MAGNA-TIP%7e+MILLETT+REAR+SIGHT+BIT) .

Was wondering if you had even seen a Millett when you were so anxious to go to a stock sight. It's hard to beat the Millett. Good luck with your new revolver.

Gillster, I hadn't seen the Millett at all before I wanted to replace it. I thought I would just put it back to stock since I liked that look... but as soon as I saw it that all changed. Great sight picture, rock solid, great adjustment. I love it! Thanks for the info!!!
