M14 sling smells really bad

I was recently given an M14 web sling I would like to use. It a brownish color in very good condition and appears to make from nylon. The problem is, it smells really strange. I can't really describe it very well, but it is kind of an "old' smell. Handling it even makes the hands stink of it. I've tried cleaning it by various method. I soaked it in detergent for two days and ran it through a washing machine twice. While this has made a big difference, it still stinks. I'm just about ready to give up on this, but figured I'd see if anyone here had any ideas.

try shaking it in a plastic bag with a few squirts of fabreeze

X-14 or bleach may work

Soak it in hydrogen peroxide for a day or two. The cheap 3% stuff you can get at the supermarket will probably do just fine. It won't harm the sling at all but bleach will.

I agree with Blackhawk - soak it in peroxide for a bit to kill off the mildew. If that doesn't work, you can soak it in Lysol concentrate for half an hour or so and then rinse thoroughly by soaking in clear water and rinsing several times (very important or the Lysol could potentially cause chemical burns).
If THAT doesn't work, new web-type slings are pretty cheap.

You could try soaking in OxyClean also.

My first thought was that it was a leather sling that someone wanted to use shoe polish on and he really didn't know **** from shinola.

Sniffing slings is a fetish to be avoided at all costs. It leads to sniffing buttstocks and other items. I once caught a guy with FAL gas tubes in both nostirls! :D
The Febreeze idea is a good one. That stuff works pretty good.

Maybe the previous owner liked to get 'tactical' in the barnyard.:D

One of the best mixtures for removing odors (will remove skunk smell also) is 2 bottles hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda, and one squirt liquid soap (any brand). Put this into a spray bottle, mix it up, and have at it.
I got the recipe from a magazine years ago. It came in really handy when I hit a skunk with my motorcycle. Took the smell off of the machine, clothes, and leathers. No color damage of any kind. Rinse with clean water afterward.

The "brownish color" gives it away. It is clearly a G-Sling!:D

The previous owners DI told him he'd "Put his butt in a sling".
Unfortunately, he got it backwards. :p

I bought one of those Chicom AK mag chest pouches from Numrich. It was in VG condition but had a little mildew on it. I filled a bucket with a solution of warm water and some Oxclean powder and let the pouch soak overnight, then let it air dry. No more mildew or funky smell.
