First and foremost, sir, it is entirely inappropriate to ask for input all the while insulting people with such childish name-calling. The assumption of off topic discourse that might result from your inquiry is just that, an assumption. And we all know what happens when you assume!

Secondly, if you have some personal dislike for the venerable Makarov and wish to not purchase one, that is fine. However, to deny the purchase of a perfectly serviceable weapon simply because it is not "new" is foolish. Pistols are very hard to ruin; though they might be scratched and worn on the outside, the mechanics of them are often mint and can run like new for thousands of rounds.

As far as I am aware, there is no manufacturer of repute selling a brand-new weapon for two-hundred dollars.

Hmmm. Without doing some quick online shopping to verify any current prices, I'd have to opine that I'd look for a decent .22 self stuffer. I think I'd rather have quality than quantity, in terms of caliber.

Um, does a sawed off coach gun count? :D

Commercial Makarovs from Izmash or Arsenal Bulgaria are most definitely factory new guns, so I'd be careful with the "moron" and "nonsense" talk.

If you want a lively and civil discussion on the subject, you may want to avoid starting it out with that. I dislike threads where people ask "Brand A or B?", and someone chimes in with "Brand C!", but there's no need to be that confrontational.

When I first read topic line, I thought "New shotgun" :) Then save up for a handgun (probably a Taurus revolver) in the future.

I'd also suggest an attitude adjustment:scrutiny:

Kel-Tec P11 9mm. $199 at CDNN

And you would get more responses without insulting people.;)

As one of the morons you referred to, based on your attitude, I'd say you should not own a firearm and should be without a means of personal defense.

Or how about an RG-22? That moronic enough for you?

If I only had $200.00 to spend on a new handgun, I'd save another three or four hundred bucks and get a good one.

Simple as that.

$200 or under for new?

Not likely, but used you should be able to find lots of decent guns. My brother just took possession of a South African RAP 440 for $195. http://www.cruffler.com/Features/DEC-01/review-December-01.html

I deleated the original post. It was a stupid question and I could see the path this thread was taking.

In the immortal words of Mike Tyson, this thread should fade into "bolivion".

I'm with Perfesser. Yes, it isn't new, but you can get some pretty good used revolvers for near that price.

With only 200 to spend I'd look for a decent used 4" 357.

You're either in the used market or you're banking on someone selling you a handgun way below cost. I don't own one, but the Makarov's sound like the way to go -- seriously. I did get a rather nice S&W Mod 19 for $230 ...

$200 will almost buy me a case of ammo.

I picked up a S&W 64 in excellent condition for $130 at a pawn shop. I carry it daily now. At that price, I can afford to lose it.

Absent knowledge of the deleted initial post, it would be a shotgun, and I would choose to have my assailants come through an 18"x18" wall hole 5' above the ground one at a time and armed only with rocks.

Taurus 85 snubbie in .38 spcl. You can get a blued steel plain jane for about $200. Also a snubbie Rossi 351 blued 2" bbl. 5 shot in .38spcl. You may be able to get one of these for less than $200. They are well made, solid handguns. BTW I'm talking new here, not used.

I woouldn't want to upset anyone but the Makarov is the way to go in my opinion. I love mine had for 4 or 5 yrs. and I trust my life to it.

Not much under $200. Maybe a Rossi .38 $200 - $ 250
Fire Storm .380 $200 - $250
Kel Tek P32 $200 - $250 (Wouldn't want it to be my only weapon but its better than nothing)

I'd personally carry a Ball bat over anything in a .22 only good use for these are target practice and squirrel hunting.

Maybe something used or if if it's just for the house a shotgun.

I bought a Lorkin .380 once for $100. Biggest POS I've ever seen best use for it was as a hammer.

MY 2 choices(prices are for in my area)

1) CDNN has a Mossberg 500 for $199
2) I know I will probably get flack for this, but I'm willing to take the heat --- HI-POINT! You can get a 9mm for around $100
3) Bersa Thunder .380 - Around $199

Firestar, you may not want to hear this but, if you spend a mere "$39" more, you can pick up a quality used S&W 5946 in 9mm from CDNN...;)

I'm going to break from the mold here and say....
...For 2 hundy, get 5 Ravens! Yes that's right. You've heard of the New York reload right? Well try the Compton reload. One as the primary and one in each front and back pocket. Since they are so cheap, just fire to slide lock (oh wait, um, fire till you hear a click that means your firing pin landed on an empty chamber and broke) and toss it for the next one. Don't discount the little .25acp either. You get 1 out of 30 of those lil buggers into the right spot and it might seriously injure somebody.

I've actually got a Raven and even fired it towards a target before. So I know what I'm sayin.

I have a German PPK and a Mak .380. Because I paid less for the Mak 380 doesn't mean I shoot it less than the PPK. The Mak is a great buy at any price less than $250.

I CAN ONLY RECOMMEND A HI-POINT 45 AUTO NEW COST IS $159. UGLEY AS SIN AND ALL THE FEEL OF YOUR AVERAGE BRICK BUT THE WORK JUST FINE WITH HARDBALL. IF ITS GOOD ENOUGH FOR CHUCK TAYLOR (HARDBALL NOT THE HI-POINT) ITS GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME.

I missed the original post having come in after it was deleted so I don't know all your criteria but here is what I can give you based on what it seems like you want.

New only there aren't many options. Assuming home defense you can get a Mossberg shotgun for around $200 (probably a little more but still $250 or less). Also, a Hi Point pistol or carbine would be good for home defense, they're cheap, they're ugly but they work and are pretty reliable- the pistol is a bit too big for carry though maybe you or the person you're advising may be able to figure it out though the carbine would certainly be HD only. If you want new and want it to be small enough to carry a Bersa Thunder in .380 is a very reliable, accurate and inexpensive gun (I love mine) for around $220 or so. If you (or the person you are advising) can wait a little while and go a little over $200 there are several reliable under (or barely over) $300 options- Taurus 82, Taurus 85, Taurus 65 and 66, Taurus 605, FEG and FM Hi Power clones, Rossi snubs just to name a few. If you really want to be right at $200 (or maybe a tad higher) a .22lr pistol may be a decent bet as well, loaded up with Stingers or similar higher end .22lr ammo.

Still, I agree with many who have said that a used gun may be a good choice. A quality used firearm can be a great value- cared for they can last virtually forever. Revolvers especially can be good used bets today.

For $200, I was able to get myself a Bulgarian Mak and 500 rounds. Not a bad deal if you ask me, but what would I know since I'm a moron.:)

Another moron checking in.

I found a NIB Russian Mak .380 for $129.99 and bought it even though I didn't need it. It would be far from my 1st choice as a SD pistol, but loaded with HydroShoks and considering it's perfect reliability (so far), it wouldn't be my last choice either.

OTOH, I wouldn't feel totally unprotected with one of the surplus Czech 7.62X25 pistols I sometimes see advertised in my area for under $150. I have read that Nazis soldiers feared the 1400fps Soviet 7.62X25 cartridge more than any other SMG round. There must have been a reason for that.

Makarov
FEG PJK-9HP
Arcus 94
Kel-Tec
Bersa
Daewoo DP-51
Taurus revolver
Used Smith revolver maybe model 10
Used Ruger

$200 is a bit tight for a budget, but they are out there. If a gun is under $250 I check it out pretty well at the gunshops. There are some great deals out there. Be quick and carry cash...or a credit card.

I'd keep saving until I had more money. Your options will be much greater, and you'll probably end up with the gun that you'd upgrade to eventually anyway.

2 Hi-Point 9's. LOL, just kidding.

Probably look for a police trade in revolver, but you said NEW, so in that case, I don't really know of any quality firearm to be had for $200 in my neck of the woods.

Might try looking around a bit. Bargains are out there. I just picked up a FN P-35 (Browning High-Power) for $200. It looks a little rough due to the type of finish (baked on) and the sights kinda suck, but it was originally carried lots and shot little. I don't even think it was shot enough to break it in. Mags are cheap and plentiful, there is a following of P-35's just like 1911's. Rifling is sharp and there is little wear on contact surfaces. 115 grainers hit a little low, but I ventilated the "A" Zone on an IPSC target with it.
The owner is moving and just wasn't interested in keeping it and I'm using it for a project gun. So the sight and finish issue will be resolved.
