Hi Power quandry

I think I want a Hi Power. I've posted about this before, read the other posts and I'm still confused :o
Checking the auctions at auctionarms & gunbroker gets more confusing. You got Hungarian, Belgan, FG's, FEG's, 9mm, 40sw, 45acp.
You got all the above in different models. Then throw in a few that are DAO. Never cared much for the idea of DAO but never owned one.
Budget restraints say I've got to stay under $400, Help!! :banghead:

I'ld say look for a good used Browning or FN Single Action Hipower. That is from my limited knolege of hipowers. Also check out www.hipowersandhandguns.com. I'm sure Mr. Camp will be here shortly.

If it's not a Herstal made or FN marked "Made in Belgium. Assembled in Portugal" High Power, it's a clone!!
I understand that some of the clones are quite good!!
Arcus comes to mind.

Hello. I have had good luck in shooting both the FM and FEG Hi Power-pattern pistols in single-action. I have no advice/suggestions on the DA versions. The FEG and FM will or have varied quite a lot in terms of fit and finish. I do NOT own either the FM or FEG so I cannot give any meaningful long term observations.
At a $400 limit, I think I might save a bit more and get a new FN/Browning Hi Power or a clean used one. I bought a couple of my Hi Power Mk III pistols used and they've been stellar performers.
FWIW, the FN-marked import (same as the Browning except for roll marks) often costs a bit less even though made by the same company on the same machinery. "Browning" is just more recognized in the US than "FN" by most folks, it seems.
Best.

No one can add more than Mr. Camp on Browning Hi-Powers so, I will only echo his sentiments. I have two "Browning" Hi-Powers and an FN Hi-Power from FNH-USA. (http://www.fnhusa.com/contents/hg_hpseries.htm) The FN is every bit the pistol the Browning is, though it only comes in a MK-III version. If you want the gloss blued model (Standard) or the two tone (Practical), save even more money and get a Browning.
I also echo getting either the HP/SA (single action) or, the HP/SFS (Safe Fast Shooting) models. In fact, I kind of wish I had an SFS model. :scrutiny:
Have your dealer or FFL quote you on ordering one from the closest FN distributor and see what you come up with. A good used one would be very nice! BTW, they're my favorite pistols! :D

Thanks for the replies! Finding a used one locally is probably not going to happen, limited resources.
Checked CDNN's website, they have:
SFS MKIII, matte finish, 9mm, one 10 & one 15 round mag for $449
Full Size, double coat military finish w/ lanyard ring $349
Another full size, no model number, also #449.
Mr. Camp; if you ever find you have too many Hi Powers, give me a call! :D
Gonna have to buy your book when I get one of these.

Hello, Sisco, and thank you. I usually keep my Hi Powers, but will certainly contact you should I find one "right" at a shop, etc.
Best.

The "SFS" is a safety fast shooting system modified hi power.
The military model is decently priced.
For $300 from CDNN or Century, or gunbroker.com, the Arcus 94 is an excellent Hi Power clone. Takes all the same parts the only difference is the slide is squared instead of rounded. Good shooters.

Mr Camp; I had visited your website before but forgot what a wealth of information it contained!
If you do come across anything let me know!
MrMurphy; I have looked at the Arcus and read good things about them but the two toned finish isn't my cup 'o tea.

The recent Shotgun News has an ad from The Dealer's Warehouse. They are selling Argentine FM HPs, made under license, for $299. Full size or compact for the same price.
I've had an FM for several years. It's been used at bowling pin and IDPA matches and occasionally as a house gun. It isn't as well finished as a Belgian HP, but it works well.
I replaced the factory safety which I found too small. Otherwise it is almost stock.
