Of these three, what would you pick and why.

Model 94 Winchester 30-30 as a good brush gun. Longer range....anything else....

Another vote for the Marlin 45-70!
'Cuz if 540grains of hardcast lead at 1,550fps can't kill it, it WON'T DIE!

Note the "Marlin ONLY" reference on the really heavy monster load. That'll tell you all you need to know about their quality compared to anything else.

Stick with the Winchester. Less moving parts.

45/70 or 450 Marlin
So far the write in candidates have pretty much trounced the options on the ballot by a 3 to 1 margin. To bad we can't do this with our elected officials :D

The Savage Model 99 in .300 is simply the highest form to which the rifle ever evolved.

I voted for the BLR, but I'd get one in .308 if possible.
Another great choice would be a Winchester 1895 in .30-06 or .405. If it's good enough for Teddy...:D :D :D

Gotta put my first deer rifle in this. Marlin 336 carbine in .35 cal Remington.
Put down many a deer in my situations, Missouri with shots restricted to 100 yards or so by timber and brush. Also used it in Texas and it did nasty things to those little deer in the Lano area.

Wow, a poll I can actually participate in.
I chose the Savege Mdl 99. I've always had Winchester 94's and they have served me well. However I have wanted one of the Savage 99's with the rotary magazine for years. Maybe some day.

300 Savage is the father of the 308 Win according to Elmer Keith. Offered ~30/06 power in a compact package. The model 99 was probably the nicest levergun ever made, imho, especially before they succumbed to cheap looking pressed in checkering, etc.

Six of one half dozen of another. For me it would pretty much boil down to looks. Life it too short to hunt with an ugly rifle. I'd go with the Savage 99 out of those three.
BTW- Get a Glock! ;)

How do they chamber a lever action in a "pointy" cartridge like .308?
Do you have to find flat nosed rounds (is that an oxymoron?:))

Easy. You use a box or rotary magazine instead of a tubular one.

Jem- I'm just jabbing ribs because people are recommending rifles that sixgun_symphony didn't list. A Grock rifle...now that is just scary! :D

The Win 88 action is the fastest, slickest and smoothest lever action ever made. It is also the strongest, true bolt gun strength. The savage would be my second choice, just don't like the BLR.

win 88 good all around cartrige, similar lines to a 99 but more versitile and it's not a "clockwork rifle" like the browning. I almost voted sav 99 but the 88 is better for scope mounting and 308 is a little better cartrige.

On that list? The Winchester Model 88. My pal Marty elk hunts with his. It's light, short, accurate. They should call it a carbine.
I had never seen one of them before I saw Marty's and I have to say, after fondling it and shooting it.. I kind of wanted one.
As for the Browning BLR never thought the price was right. The Savage lever rifles have always struck me as funny looking and they are prone to cracked stocks (I've seen a lot of them crack where they meet the reciever, but maybe that's why they were for sale in the first place)
If I was going to buy a new lever rifle to shoot pointy bullets I'd pick a Winchester 1895 in 30-06, That's one purty rifle.

I have a BLR, I wouldn't trade it for any other! I know of none that stack up to the fit, finish, feel and accuracy. I do like the Marlin Lever guns in the 444, 450, 45-70 cartridges. If you have handled a Browning, much less shot one, you have seen the difference. If not, do so. It also shoots more like a bolt rifle than any of the others I know of. Mine is a newer one, not the M81 BLR, I like the M81 even better, they are selling it now again for 2003.

M88..
As a third generation owner of a model '88 in .243 that's been in yearly hunting service since the early 60's (when my grandfather purchased it 2nd hand).. I'm slightly biased :)
It's action is still buttery smooth, and the gun is dead on accurate.
Never let me down in the 13+ years it's been in my possesion.
