Havent heard from ya yet on the sucess of your hunt. Give us some details.

I'm packed up and ready to go. Gonna head out to the field tomorrow afternoon and set up camp. Got a few good looking places with plenty of does and yearlings with some buck signs as well. Gonna get chilly this weekend and might even rain on me.

Lenny,

Thanks for the post. I got back yesterday from the hunt (mule deer in 30B). No luck. We started out near 47 Ranch off High Lonesome Rd. I did get a shot at a spike at fairly close range, but was so excited I pulled the shot and missed. I did check everywhere around where the deer had been, and there was not a drop of blood to be found. That was on day 3. Opening morning my hunting partner and I both saw (seperatly) a nice buck. Couldn't tell how many points due to the angle I saw him from, but my partner said he was a 2x2. The antlers were pretty tall with a wide spread though. By the time I saw him he was moving away pretty quickly and almost straight into the rising sun. I gave chase to see if I could get into position for a shot, but the terrain wasn't ammenable to leaving tracks so he got away pretty easily.

After missing that spike I didn't see any deer for about 5 days, not even a doe. Around day 6 we split for a new area, between Palominas and Bisbee. That didn't look too promising so by day 8 we figured we'd work the San Pedro River (that is the far western boundary of the unit). On Saturday (day 9) I did see a large group (~8) of does and fawns. I was hoping for nubs on at least one head, but alas, twas not to be. That afternoon we split for home even though the season doesn't officially close until today. Both of us have waaaay to much crap to do, and really need the weekend to get it done.

Sounds like you had a good time.

I went out last Thursday eve to Bear Grass tank area SE of Arivaca. Got up Friday morning and hunted a tank and surrounding washes near the foothills of the mountains. Didnt see one deer at all. Seen quite a few hunters though. The weather was a little threatening and I was way back in the bush so I elected to head out and go down to Ruby road by Pena Blanca Lake. Don met me there Friday eve and we set up camp down by Sycamore Canyon. Went out Sat and Sunday and seen quite a few Whitetail (my tag is for Whitties) but all were slick heads (does). Got to within 20 yards of two big does before they got nervous and bolted. I came in last night to pick up the wife (she flew back from New York) and am hanging around the house today to do bills and restock the goods. I plan on going back out tomorrow morning to the Buenos Aries (sp?) Wildlife Refuge to hunt till I either shoot something or sundown Friday, whichever comes first.

Overall, its much different than what Im used to. Hunting back in Georgia, we were in swamps and hardwoods. Here its alot of walking and glassing ridges and more uphill/downhill walking.

Im determined to get some meat for the freezer though. My 16 year old daughter was bummed that I came home this weekend empty handed.
