I just bought a used Model 29-2 from a local dealer, and am looking for info on what year it was made and so on. Is there a website somewhere that has S&W revolver serial numbers? I checked on the S&W site and didn't see a link, but did download an owner's manual.

This is a 6 or 6 1/2" model 29-2, serial number N438XXX. It checked out according to Jim March's guidelines, and has excellent bluing with only a slight wearing around the muzzle. Unfortunately, the grips are replacement Pachmayrs -- no box, papers or original grips. The chambers are a bit dirty, and look as if 44 Specials were shot through them.

Remove the cylinder and crane. Let them soak a day or two in a jar of Hoppe's No. 9. You'll find they're much easier to clean.

The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson by Nahas and Supica is the Bible for S&W freaks. Bookstores or the auction sites for around $30.

I spent part of yesterday cleaning it up. The bluing isn't quite as good as I first thought. In the flutes of the cylinder some of the bluing has rusted/discolored, and mild rubbing with 0000 steel wool and FP-10 wouldn't clean it up. Usually that combination does the trick. I removed the grips and it's all good there. Now, out to the range with it tomorrow morning!
