replacing Finnish M39 sling swivels?

M39s have 1" sling swivels, preventing use of 1.5" slings like a 1907 or M14 cotton sling. Has anyone ever tried replacing the existing swivels with larger ones, or know of how to do this?
I could drill holes and install aftermarket swivels onto the stock, but I'd rather use that as a last resort (my rifle is unissued and has a gorgeous stock that would look crappy with a third set of sling attachment points).
Thanks

The gunsmith rule of thumb is to modify the cheapest part. In this case the sling is far cheaper than the rifle.

I got a nice Brownell's 1" "Latigo" sling for my M39, which works well as a shooting sling. You might be able to jimmy something up with a 1907 sling and some brass or Delrin clips like luggage stores or outdoor stores sell for repairing clip-on shoulder straps on tote bags, etc.
For just a cheap carrying sling, a Chinese SKS sling with the leather tabs on both ends would work just fine.
