Consider the source: "I can tell you already he's a better candidate than John Ashcroft," snaps Democrat Sen. Charles Schumer.

If "The Joker" likes him, he must be good. Bush is off to a good start - this Gonzales fellow for AG coupled with his amnesty program for illegal aliens shows that he's not worried about telling his conservative base to "bend over".

Schumer's opinion doesn't tell us much. I don't think it has much to do with the 2A; he hated Ashcroft's religious stance.

Everything you didn't like about W in his first four years will only grow now that he need not worry about re-election. He might have to watch his act to make sure we don't turn against the G.O.P.
Congress and Senate are Republican, so hopefully there is some back bone there to make sure things do not get out of hand.
He's still better than Kerry but we really do need a 3rd party in this country.
Do you think they will run Rudy Guiliani in '08?

I didn't know that about Guiliani. I subsequently read other posts and found that out. He's also to the left on other core G.O.P. issues as well.
So, who is to be for the G.O.P. in '08?

I personally can't think of anything Shrub could do that make me welcome Hillary in '08. She really is a monster. I'm waiting for Bush to stab the NRA support in the back, he's got 4 years to do it - I'm convinced he won't let us down.

So if Gonzales isn't going to take Ashcroft's pro-Second Amendment stance, is there anything we can do to get an alterate nominated before the political machinery goes to far with Gonzales? Who do we contact to voice our concerns? With Bush a lame duck, I suspect the GOP party elders have more to lose from losing the gun vote.

Good reads on Gonzales and where he has opposed Ashcroft in the past:

For gun owners, a specific point of interest is that Gonzales objected to Ashcroft's letter to the NRA declaring the Second Amendment to be an individual right. Contrary to what the above link claims, lawyers close to both men claim the fight wasn't over the change in policy as much as it was over the fact that Ashcroft made the public announcement without consulting the White House.

In any case, I'd say the safe bet is that Gonzales is not going to be anywhere near as good on RKBA as Ashcroft was. The good news is his appointment to AG removes him from consideration for the Supreme Court for several years. Considering how prominently his name had been mentioned as a candidate for SCOTUS, we may be getting off easy.
