Suspect In Fatal Ala. Office Shooting In Custody

Huntsville Police Surround Apartment Building; 4 Killed Earlier

POSTED: 9:02 a.m. EST February 25, 2003
UPDATED: 6:34 p.m. EST February 25, 2003

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- Police in Huntsville say the suspect in the shooting deaths of four people at a temporary employment agency has surrendered after a standoff at his apartment Tuesday.

Police say 23-year-old old Emanuel Burl Patterson (pictured, right) is in custody fired at officers while holed up in his apartment for several hours after the original shooting at Labor Ready, an employment agency near downtown.

A fifth victim was wounded at Labor Ready, but the 46-year-old man is expected to be treated and released for a gunshot to the leg.

"Two guys got in an argument and another guy stepped in and the one guy pulled out a gun and shot him, then shot his father and then started shooting at everybody -- anybody he could," witness Peter Ackerman told WVTM-TV in Birmingham, Ala. "His gun emptied. I don't know if he reloaded or what but he shot another guy outside and got in his car and left."

Police say they found 9mm shell casings at the scene of the shootings.

Huntsville Hospital spokesman Terri Bryson said three people were dead at the scene at Labor Ready.

A 55-year-old man who was undergoing surgery died later.

Police Lt. Vince Dauro said the shootings followed an argument about 6:30 a.m. CST at the front counter of Labor Ready. He said about 10 or 15 people were in the area when pistol shots were fired.

Police spokesman Wendell Johnson said about an hour later, shots were fired on a road where a police SWAT team had cornered a suspect.

A police spokesman said employees and others describe the suspect as a "very unstable individual." He said a fight had broken out between two groups of men over a CD player before the shooting.

A witness said the gunman turned his weapon on her and pulled the trigger, but nothing happened. She said she ran into a closet where several other people were already hiding.

Police said the assailant fled in a car.

On its Web site, Labor Ready describes itself as the nation's leading provider of temporary manual labor to the light industrial and small-business markets.
